I have kinda mixed feelings about the leak of the source.

First it's a real dumper for Valve, its something they worked lots on for years and without earning a penny with it, it's already floating on the internet.

However, for starting pro-programmers this might be a good oppertunity to learn something about other engines.

It's not. Currently there's a build of the source available (works, although it's extremely buggy and comes with some user-built test maps), and a leak of the game itself. I've seen hundreds of screens from it and believe me it's not fake.

I'm really sorry for VALVe.

Stop believing the beta is real. It's not.

It's FAKE; they just managed to get some quick maps in Hammer, and imported some textures and models of HL1, then put all into the leaked HL2 engine...

This is not the HL2 maps, nor the textures, nor the models; it's true that you can move around, but there's no sound and it's quite buggy...

Please, do a bit of research before posting this as major, just to bring more disgrace to Valve...

In fact its way harder to belive for me that they could make that code run in just a few days than to think that someone who stole 30Mb wouldn't have tried to get as much compiled game and media as he could.

Actually, someone presumably did make the game load a completely blank map. This is not the case here though, the pre-release includes 50 or so models from the game, including the jet-skii, textures etc. It is around 1.3GB in size

You are talking about a completely different version, the one map without any textures etc that was blended together with the source code. The pre-release is something else.

If it does turn out to be true, as some seem to be hinting it is, how much further will this delay the release for the game? If it isn't true then someones did a good job in faking the leaked version but for what reason.

Is it to further attack valve and rub their noses in the fact they have lost the code recently. They then leak this supposed demo and have people rushing to grab it then it turns the players against valve and the real half life 2 as the leak is so poor they assume game will be the same.

Or its someones idea of a joke to see how there cobbled together leak can fool people. If it is it looks like its working so far.

Whatever the reason behind it if this is how any major new game is to be treated then the games makers had better not be connected to the internet in any form. So as to prevent further occurances of this madness again.

Lets hope the game isnt further delayed if this leak turns out to even have just a small percentage of truth.

If the crackers REALLY wanted to get at valve, they would have copied all of the source and models/textures/etc, deleted them from Valve's computers, and held it for ransom instead of giving it out for free.

Although presumably Valve has some kind of off-site backup for their data (if they have good disaster-recovery foresight).

Because ATi probably hand it over to promote their Radeon. And only three maps were leaked. As for HL2 you can't practicly say the whole game got leaked, including it's source.

Wonder why the steal the source code now.. played the beta now and its quite impressing running around on some maps and trying shotgun and cowbar.. but for 10mins.. then you delete it again..
