Newcomers still able to have a weapon to counter a fully equipped player. They would be able to work out where that weapon was after a while, building up map knowledge, movement skills and where to be or not to be.

Also can help prevent rapers, as they can't keep picking up the LG and raping with the ammo, unless they kill someone who drops the LG then they wouldn't be able to do so for as long. They would also have to move on and would need to remember ammo boxes, or develop a better style of fragging where the other player gets the LG. (just thinking about many maps causing frantic fights round the weapon for e.g. quarantine).

Bit more skill than spawning with LG and ass raping someone.

This patch brought huge negative publicity to the game, right before the steam release. Way to go lol. The timing of this was very badly picked by the QL dev team and what happened was obvious to everyone. Also the explanation of the changes was very badly written as well, because it shouldn't start with the default servers' gametype (loadouts etc) as people outside the game just don't know about the classic premium servers, thinking now the whole game was simplified to attract noobs and old school players have no choice.
Changing the rules of the game this late, 6 years after of QL itself.
Introduced some minor movement change or changes, which seems to be either increased ground accel speed (cj) and/or that the way ledges work was changed, most probably unintentional. That changes trickjumps.
The lg knockback was decreased in all gametypes (classic included) and that's not on the patch notes. I know it's a consequence of lowering its damage, but very, very few know that and even less will make the association when reading that damage was decreased.
FFA as we know it was completely killed with this patch. Players are never going to join "classic FFA" servers, just like they don't now.
Default FFA, wth loadouts and others, is really not how free for all should be in an 'arena', 'deathmatch' game. Now it's all staying in one room with the mouse button pressed, ammo is practically infinite and there's absolutely no point in trying to pick items since that's certain death now that everyone spawns with the best weapon. Actually respawning players die faster now and are as hopeless if not more than before.The devs really don't understand that gametype at all and most probably have no clue about game design.
"Classic" gameplay is so different than the default that QL is two games now. On the long run this will kill the competitive scene, as that makes less likely that noobs will join competitions and organized matches, that use the classic gameplay instead of the default they are used to.
The patch still wasn't large enough. What this game always needed was remaking Q3 from scratch, like cs:go and many many others out there, not just copypasting it. This point is particularly about graphics and assets in general, because they are awful. Even using the same engine (with some additions), improving graphics, textures and whatnot would have been a much more meaningful change for attracting players and keep them playing than everything what' been done on QL and what was done in the latest patch.
Still no working matchmaking, still no anticheat, the interface still looks very amateur and frankly unfinished, among many other crucial features, which will not be done anytime soon as the dev team used their working hours on this patch instead of on the said.
Finally, the game became even more complicated than before. Now a newcomer has to understand all these distinctions between servers, gametypes, standard and premium, exceptions and whatnot, which is something people don't want to learn in a quick to play, short thrills game.
