Bought a laptop a couple of weeks ago (Asus n53sv). Running Windows 7. Im playing normally, and the gamma will go dark all of a sudden, randomly (like every minute or two?). What I have to do is, for example, if im playing at 1.2, then I have to change it to 1.21 (or any other value) and go back to 1.2.

It also happens every time I go to window mode then fullscreen again. Also happens with ezQuake, and not sure if it happened with QL.

I've forced the power saving options to be off, i've forced to always use the nvidia card and not the integrated graphics, i've enable/disabled options on the nvidia control panel like power saving, CUDA, multiple monitors support, vertical sync, and all that. It keeps happening. It's really frustrating.

I updated the nvidia graphics.

What can I do?

Same problem here.
I couldn't deal with it so I made something like this:
bind [ "seta r_gamma 1.0; wait 10; seta r_gamma 1.1"

This problem is not resolved by the end, but it's better to click one button instead of typing 3x r_gamma in console.

If anyone knows the full solution to this problem then please share.

EDIT: Oh I didin't notic that this thread is about Q3 not QL. In that case I don't really know if that script is going to work or not, but still u can try. ; )

It probably happens with QL, but I didn't play long enough for it to happen.

I also have that bind thing but it's a really cheap workaround. I paid 800� for a laptop :)

The other thread had 2 problems, and for some reason people keep replying to the first problem (that already got fixed) and keep ignoring the second (this gamma problem). Apparently the only way to make people read that problem was to make another thread exclusively about it.

I don't care if gaming on laptop is or isn't an awesome idea. My laptop must be able to run said games without problems and I paid for it.

well I remember when I encountered that thing, there were settings about full screen mode and all kind of other shits, so it was just a wild guess..

Just tell me where said options are exactly at? Are you talking just about the nvidia options like CUDA, antialiasing, vertical sync etc? (where you can select global profile, or profile for individual apps etc)

btw, isn't there a function key for this on asus laptops? iirc there were something like that on asus laptops as well.
Is it possible that you accidentally press a key combination what lowers the gamma?

i think he meant that the fn keys on laptops are usually bound to something by default, did you check your quake binds for something like that?
like fn+2 is could just aswell be lowering your gamma?

another thing i guess someone else mentioned above as "smartdimmer", some of the newer laptops (and all smartphones) come with an automatic dimmer that checks with the environmental light (dunno if that makes any sense) and corrects your gamma.

except that's pretty much what flux is supposed to do. flux ftw, on linux it even recognizes quake and ups the general blue'ishness of things :p

I get exactly the same issue in QL, cnq3 and ezQuake...I think it's just a video card thing. It's not so annoying...you just make a bind that resets the gamma.

Yes it's fucking annoying. It happens too often and breaks your focus. The whole screen flashes in white for a second before the gamma changes.

I had a line in my cfg that would change fov and crosshair for a while, it was on a key I would hit some rare times. Something like this maybe?

have u tried making qlconfig and repconfig readonly after setting it right?

i assume u ran down ur cfg for any double gamma commands, good way to test that is loading someone elses cfg and see if that gives u the same problem.

It has nothing to do with the gamma settings on Quake. It just goes darker.

This is really driving me nuts. I can't figure out what the fuck is going on. It's just like if the game went "out of focus" when on fullscreen, so you get this "default" dark tone and you have to change the gamma in the game again. Fucks sake.
