That's a good point, but if masters was the only recent tourney used to generate the seeds, I wouldn't include Killsen or Vo0 either.

However, Vo0 deserves high seed from his performance at Gamegune, and while Killsen forfeited at masters, he has a very reasonable Quake history. (As I've argued before, previous tourney results should also be counted due to the relatively short time-frame of the Quake revival.)

Edit: You could definitely argue for a Strenx high seed from the French qualifiers. Same argument for Rapha, Nike, If-22.

czm is top seed for reasons I understand, but judging by current showings should have been seeded just high. Same probably applies to cooller but hey I am a cooller fan boy !!!

and no wonder 2 french players are in high seed (its a french run competiiton but I would just keep linkin in high seed), but I think both griffin and destrukt deserves high seed.

good to see that finally people are taking noctis seriously :)

Although the seeds are ok, like other people have mentioned, it's odd that czm is top seed and griffin/dkt are challengers. Although, with the amount of good players here, the difference between the high seeds and the challengers are blurred.

I see where your coming from! Jibo's lg and rg aim (in particular) are both amazing! Here's how I see it:

Both players have excellent timing, movement and aim, as well as excellent strategical awareness, but I think avek would probably beat jibo because he's getting better and better all the time.

Jibo's been on this sort of form for a long time now, and hasn't really improved (imo of course!). The only difference in jibo I see is a slight play style difference, he now seems to be more aggressive and relies on his aim a little more than he used to. So a defensive player with tactically appropriate aggression is the way I would sum up his play style.

Avek, on the other hand, seems to have just got stronger really quickly. I don't know if he was playing seriously or not, but a couple of months before ESWC masters avek got absolutely raped by noctis on hub and dm6, yet he gave cypher a seriously close run for his money at the tourney itself; as well as winning gamegune, of course.

Also, he lost two straight maps to jibo in the first BO3, yet he wins the same two maps sequentially in the next BO3. It sends the message to me that Avek "sussed out" Jibo's playstyle, and as such took the spoils ( I think this is especially relevant on ztn, where Jibo's game is very impressive!).

Avek also seems to play a lot more aggressively than jibo and is as such willing to take more risks, which Jibo, as a defensive player, will not. So it seemed to be quite often the case that Avek out-intimidated Jibo at some of the important power up fights, in particular on dm6.

I just think Avek will narrowly take it if they meet again. Either way, it should still be an excellent game to watch!!

Kind of odd, but I still agree czm should be top seed, and its tough to choose the seeds, especially high seeds, in this situation. Nevertheless this looks to be a fucking awesome tournament. I heard arrw and nike weren't going...but nike is still on the list so hm

Seriously though imo if 'e-sports' is ever gonna go somewhere there should be some kind of hard limit.
Take any real sport... if you screw up somewhere along the road to the final you won't be there.
Allthough I personaly like to see czm (just an example) at the event it's realy unfair in general for the rest of the people who did perform well in order to get there.

It's like in swimming Phelps would fuck up his 8th semi final and therefor wouldn't get gold and thus not his famous record to be... but the olympic commitee sais:

Well you did your best in the other 7 races, here's a 9th lane for you and your time will be registered etc.

And Phelps still wins. This just will not happen (prolly because phelps doesn't seem to fuck up, but also because the olympics will lose it's status as platform of a real sporting event).

And btw I don't mean to say that czm is as large in quake as phelps is in swimming it's just a situation scetch ;)

I would be pretty pissed if I managed to qualify, and I got 4th behind CZM for instance. (or even wors if I got eliminated by toxter). But what do you think that the swimmer who would get silver at the olympics in the previous situation would feel like?

And there should also be rules about who gets to go if someone drops & which criteria a wildcard is given.

P.S. I'm 'content' with the fact that I fucked up and therefor can't go :)

there is truth in what you say but I think e-sports has not reached that level of professionalism yet, it is still some kind of show business (like circus/ magic show/ singing contest) where the contestants show their skill and the crowd goes wowooohh, this is what czm can produce no matter how rusty he is/ will be. I would be glad to see that day, when e-sports will be treated as real sports ( I personally find quake not any less real sport than chess / scrabble etc ), and then yeah czm should not qualify.

you're trying to say its the same as if czm didnt get out of his group stages at the eswc finals. but then suddenly is allowed to play in the playoffs. its not exactly the same thing. they had some spare slots for the tournament and they invited some good and reliable players. nothing wrong with that i say! :p

i get your point, but i think you're being over dramatic! at the end of the day if you win, you should be the best player at the event, if you lose.. well you just weren't good enough.

well there is that way of looking at it, I looked at it like: ESWC FINALS = final race, and the qualifier = 'semi final' aka qualification for the final (and well the eswc masters was just a 2nd qualifier so he actualy allready had 2 chances... dunno actualy if he tried to play in the usa qualifier I didn't follow it but as it was open to everyone imo he had 2 chances... this itself was already kind of bad imo)

but ye k you're right that they are not actualy 'adding a new lane' they are just filling a new name in where someone dropped.

My main point of criticism is that ESWC = Electronic Sports World Cup. How rediculous is it from a sports perspective to give someone who didn't qualify an advantage over people who did ?

Personaly though I don't realy mind cuz heck I ain't there and I like to watch him play anyways :D

I understand and agree to a point with what you are saying, this is what I think on the matter:

Yes czm didn't qualify for the finals, but, someone else has dropped out ( can't remember who), so someone has to take this person's place. I feel that is the real question, and I don't think there is "better" candidate for this place than czm; after all, he did lose the playoff to zero4 for the last place at the final avaliable form the masters. Who would have been more appropriate to take the "open spot" avaliable at the finals? I just feel that someone who just missed out on qualifying via the masters deserves a final spot more than someone who just missed out on a final spot via an online qualifier :) Just my two cents!

Regardless, I think it's always great to see czm play! Especially if he were in the same shape as he was in 2004 :D

We want to see our heroes, our legends and we mostly dont care about rising stars or players who currently have enough skill to match the best, but are still relatively unknown and yet not enough experienced to do well under big pressure. Wanna proof? Always check the number of gtv spectators.

v3rb, but in Poland the only multiclan with some serious money, which could actually send a player to US, is PGS. However they're bunch of fuckers looking only for $$$ for themselves, not for investing in their players.

I was actually happy that matr0x won polish ESWC, not zik, because FX (matr0x's clan) could have had problems (=money) with sending him if he came 2nd. PGS is MUCH richer clan, so I thought (and everybody) zik won't have problems with going to the US. But as you see, PGS = lame fuckers.

zik found out the he isn't going few days ago.

Hopefully they'll replace him with some US player.

The reason why they aren't poor is probably that they don't blow their money on random stuff like you would do.
I mean, what motivation should they have to send him there? Quake3 has very little following compared to other games so they won't get much media attention by sending him which in turn means very little advertisement for their sponsors. Instead of buying an expensive flight in high season to the U.S. west coast they could use their $$$ to send some wc3/fifa/whatever players to a couple european events, and each of these events is probably get them a multiple of what they could get out of sending zik to ESWC.
Anyways, I agree that they could have told him earlier so he at least would have had the opportunity to buy a ticket out his own pocket while they were cheaper.

There is no reason in most cases. Hence hardly any big cs multigaming team having q3 players. Hence SK not willing to pay their players to go to Gamegune.
If there is enough media attention (like at ESWC) AND the player is a proven superstar (e.g. zero4) who many people know it may make sense in some circumstances. If you've got the right connections and can arrange newspaper/tv/etc. interviews with your players it may also make sense, after all its highly irrelevant if the player is good or bad. A good player just has less trouble getting the media exposure sponsors are after. In this sense it may actually have been a very smart move by 4K to get a mediocre player like ddk...they dont have to pay for him to go to ESWC finals and may even be able to market him as 'the great UK dueler', its a win-win situation :) (I'm just guessing here i have no clue what they do or don't do marketing strategy wise).

any of you got idea why whenever any event publish their seedings there always will be people that for some reason believe their rage gonna make any difference?

apart from obvious reasons like eswc not giving a fuck nobody mentions obvious, mathmatical fact that single elimation is good method to find only one, best player. double elimination makes it two, not really that much of a difference. and it works only if we assume that relation of being better player is transitive.

considering the fact that relation of being better player is "dynamic", depending on random conditions and we have small number of information to make any opinions we can rely solely on intuition when estimating whether player A is better than player B.

so your discussion can't end up different than someone bringing up nazis.

Bet Dkt wishes he played the NA final properly now! Though after reading the interview it is understandable (plus a bad break that a "nothing" match knocks you to a challenger).

Little strange to see czm as a top seed - classic czm, certainly but the lack of practice has caused him some problems.

When all is said and done though, you have to be able to beat everyone. Should be a good tournament and looking forward to the draw (and following debates over groups of death!).

LOL @ using 24inch dell tfts. I've got a Dell2408 and i think its pretty much the worst tft possible for gaming. The 6ms is not a big deal but the monitor has the biggest input lag mankind has seen. Mine is usually lagging between 40ms and 60ms input lag, but according to reviews and forums some models have up to 90ms input lag.

This tournament is going to be amazing, but i hope quakelive will finally finish up and get released... it is still way behind in terms of new maps/ ctf item balancing and luxury commands that cpma has.

The weapons in quakelive has gotten even better in terms of balancing. I was watching toxic play duel the other day.. it seems he is addicted, over 130 games of duel he has played in a very short time.. so i'm really looking forward to when quakelive is out and we have a shift of all vq3 players playing it and new up and comers (i've seen a few) mixing in.

his aim is very good like always, but he has been beaten. Got to mention that the plasma gun is really important now to spam since it is faster and hurts a lot. I'm seeing a lot of very interesting play styles.. the spawn system is pretty great and the movement IS faster. I timed it, from cpma dm6 run to qzdm6 run.. i don't know why or how but IT IS faster. Map shorter? strafes longer? i don't know but its faster AND feels much better like osp.

yes, it's just that '+back' has this negative connotation to it. Sometimes, to defeat a player with better aim, you just have to be really careful, a thing all those +back haters don't seem to get. For me it's not necessarily a bad thing, I rather watch a defensive game than a game where two aimwhores rush into each other (example: cypher-avek at masters, which I thought was a terrible game) and I hardly see players who really annoy me in their +backing. If-22 either. If anything, I find his style quite unique and a fresh breeze in these aim/LG-whoring times. I hope he does well at eswc.

Group A has 4 player, 3 of them aren't THAT good.
Group E has 3 players, all 3 of them are REALLY good. (griffin > link1n, bono, toxter)

From group A the player who will take 2nd spot (noctis 1st) and WILL ADVANCE further is still worse (with all respect) than a player from group E who WILL NOT ADVANCE (probably griffin). In this way we will have a player who got lucky (because of group) and advanced to 2nd group stage, and actually for THE BETTER player (from group E) the tournament will be already over.

It's not THAT unfair, but well, groups could've been more even.

at least Samsung or Iiyama would be better, if they MUST use tft's, but no, they are on dell, the worst of all the lcds (that I've ever used anyway).
If they gotta have big widescreens, 24" is too much. The input delay and actual response time is too high on those still. 22" Iiyama or Samsung would be much, much better, though it would not be as good as hi quality crt still of course.

There's no doubt k1llsen is a talented player. But I think talent by itself will only get you so far. I think experience and calm-under-pressure are very important for LAN situations. Moreover, it's difficult for people to adapt to other hardware (like ESWC using TFTs, for instance).

Players like Av3k, Cypher, Fox, Cooller, Czm, Jibo and Zero4 have been to soo many different tournies and played on so many different setups that they don't require a CRT or the comfort of their own home to play top-notch. That's why I think those players will rank higher.

I think Fooki mentioned that in a video interview that he thought Fox and himself have an advantage because they are so competent when it comes with playing on a variety set-ups.

yes probably, but in my mind, none can really tell how k1llsen will do at that eswc. Because, if it wasn't for the experience, pressure and different setups, he has the talent to win anyone there, except maybe the top 4 such as cypher, avek, jibo and fox... But I do see him capable of beating the likes of zero4 and cooller. (still amazed by some of his online finals against killmaster or spartie...)

k1llsen's main issue would probably be the 'different setup' part. I think he has good nerves and, altho he fuckedup his master, he probably gained some experience there and some self insurance (is that word any right? :p).

k1llsen plays on a tft at home and he has been to A LOT of events - i have no idea -- maybe he's bootcamping with someone (although he said he wasn't going to bootcamp because of his newborn son) or he doesn't have the money for the trip (no clan, no real sponsors) and didn't come back online because of that
so IF he's bootcamping and going to the finals i'll say he's aiming at top3 at least.

Wow some really tough groups, I preferred more groups w/ less players :( That is, every single group has 3-4 players which deserve to pass first group stage imo :o

Kinda had double elimination on my mind when I made the comment about it not working out.

Either way I think it's a bit of a shame that only 2 advance. You weed out like 75% of the players in just 1 round. It's a pity as spectator. While I do enjoy watching titans clash, I would also like to see some other people advance or improve or at least be able to gain some experience in a serious tournament environment.

Also, previously you had 4 players in each group and the top 2 would advance. Now there is 6 or 7 in each group and still only the top 2 advance. I wouldn't say it's illogical, since the organizers have schedules to keep and can pretty much do whatever they want, but it does seem a little arbitrary and strange

This new system makes the tourney alot better. The old format was beginning to look like a shootout. Good decision. Groups are almost perfect, although groups C and D are clearly crazy. But that's unavoidable, and fun.

There are 5 seeds:.

1. Bela-Russia-China people (Cypher, razer)
2. Those who claim not to be praccing alot (euros and russianslol).
3. Ex-superstars who are fighting for eternal glory(z4, czm, cooller)
4. dark horse america fuck yeah team(rapha/chance/destrukt/griffin)
5. people that are going to cry (Ali I N.A.B, xgo)

although i wouldn't be surprised if 3 or 4 won it.

too bad it's on a monday at work hours, which is stupid, if they care about the internet fanbase at all.

I hope these matches will not be played simultaneously like all groups because theres SO many games i want to see on gtv.

Cypher versus Noctis will be amazing.

I was thinking the same thing, considering only two out of each group of 6-7 advance. However, this way the players will get to play many more games and the best players will advance. A possible third place finisher could end up getting screwed out of a better final placing, but we should see the best of the best move on to group stage 2.
