i guess it's not about understanding, but quake being considered a violent game and the show being aired at midday

well more than 10 million people play WoW so they don't even have to aim at the avg joe, the players/community/fan base is more than enough.

People will watch the show wondering what 'pro gaming' is and they will see WoW?...

Hmm...I hope someone made a mistake an forgot to mention Quake 4 was part of this tournament. Even if they say why they could not broadcast it on CBS. At this time this seems to be more then just ignorance. Could this be malice focused at Quake 4 (or ID and Raven)?

Shooting a ball of fire at someone or shooting a rocket at someone. I don't see much of a difference there to be honest.

Violence is not violent because the fireball causes the opponent to fall to his knees instead of explode into gibs. Its violent because its an aggressive action.

boxing can be seen as hypocritical but as a virtualisation of an accepted sport that's even a part of the olympics it's accepted

wow you can barely tell wtf is going on anyway and it's cartoony violence (I guess, I've never played it, only watched a tiny bit)

quake has blood, gore and you're running around trying to shoot other people with guns (or chop them up with the gauntlet!), even though it's obviously fake and unrealistic

a movie based on quake (like say, doom, rated R) would not be shown in the time slot that the show is being broadcast in (midday)

If a care bear was trying to kill a happy unicorn with a bolt of joyful sunshine, it would still be violence.

Quake isn't even that violent :<

Even if it was really violent, it's so easy to tell it is fake since it's all a 3D rendered fantasy. It's much less convincing than the stuff Hollywood puts out.

And why is it graphical violence that gets the ESRB in a tizzy? In the game civilization IV I am sure I killed at least ten times as many "virtual lives" in one game where a nuclear war broke out, than in my entire FPS gaming history.

Civilization IV is rated E for everyone despite being able to nuke things, pillage farms to starve cities, bomb things to rubble with bombers and fight wars on an epic scale killing soldiers and civilians alike. There is not a drop of blood so the game is E.

The sick fact is, that in a 1v1 Deathmatch game, we see all the gore that happens, in fact we see more gore than what would happen as it's usually exaggerated to increase the carnage. Is it not better to play a PC game fighting and see all the virtual damage your weapons are doing to people you're killing as a lesson to be non-violent.

In civ you drop bombs on something you just see the health on the opponent go down and some explosions. The collateral damage? What about the kid who's mother got blown into pieces on her way home from work, a man who loved to run and bike that lost both legs or three recent high school graduates all needlessly killed. With nuclear weapons the scale of horror is even greater but all you see after the pretty nice looking mushroom cloud is the population number on the city drop significantly, and maybe some fallout.

Same in games like America's Army. They try to glorify and replicate combat but don't include any blood. Obviously the military doesn't want it to sink in for players that in the military you can be easily KILLed and you may well be KILLing other people (full gore enabled both situations - questionable respawn depending on religious creed).

Bottom Line - The gore is good, it helps show what is bad about violence, it can usually be turned off if someone does not want it and it is easy to tell it's just a dang video game.

They will see Guitar Hero and it just compounds the essence of awkward social situations and geekyness..

I mean I am a damn gamer and I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT watch either.. the pain is too much..

Without sounding biased, or a fanboy, an 1 on 1 FPS is the easiest to understand and watch..

If they think quake is violent well... Fight Night, two boxer trying to hit each other on the head multiple time with plan to knock the other out. WOW this game has witchcraft, spell that fry your opponent, swords, axes to bash your opponents and creatures, devils and demons i would not tell my son and daughter about (like necromancers). I think its rationalization/propaganda to cover for something else if they use the excuse "q4 is to violent". Now for Guitar hero i dont see any violence. I can understand the single player of q4 being rated 17+ but the multiplayer game is not.

WoW competition at WSVG:
- Non-personable players. Personalities there are terrible for representing this game. The MoB "spokesperson" was the only interesting part of the live feeds, but you even grow tired of his antics. Even the commentators can't help but make cracks at these poor saps.

- The commentators are shit, EVEN for the hardcore players. I can only imagine the obfuscatory broadcast to be even less appreciable to a layman. And ultimately, the only color on the commentary is completely oblivious; I only laugh at him, not with him. The cast needs more djWHEAT'esque.

- Finally, camera work is horrid. I'm guessing CBS can clean / remove / cover up a lot of the crap on camera, from what we saw on the live stream. However, the spectating was mostly unfollowable. Again, a really boring showing. I hope WSVG (or other competitions) are working intimately with Blizzard to improve the tools, but there's still something to be said for the poor use of what was given to the commentators.

All things said, it's disheartening that this showing is what will represent gaming on US television.

It's almost like they are showing these games to intentionally hurt the public perception of gaming and E-sports. I guess it is good it's getting televised but more people that bump into it channel surfing on Sunday are going to be laughing at people playing Guitar Hero and WoW instead of maybe getting to see the beauty of competitive and fast paced Quake.

Will probably do more harm than good.

GG WSVG, thanks a bunch for potraying a potential sport as something which is poor to spectate, has no depth and is basically nerdy teenagers playing games for prizes.

WSVG will find no love here on a quake site.

But still. I'm trying to be fair to WSVG, but Wow is seriously boring to watch.
