In UT, the weapons were imbalanced as hell, but balanced by positioning. In other words the map had to be balanced for the weapons.

That you could actually pwn ass with the minigun and the sniper made it a more fun game.

UT3 already failed.

You're right depending on how much it's console development has affected it. Like it will probably be a great game regardless what happens, but I would hate for it to be too "soft."

I'm a new UT2004 player and that is a difficult game to pick up as a beginner. So I mean in the interest of the growth of DM 1v1 it would be good if the game is somewhat easier to learn, and it's probably going to be. But I just hope it doesn't go too far.

They really shouldn't make the game any easier than it already is (with UT2004).
As for growing 1v1 DM - introducing an automated matchmaking mechanic would do much more in that regard than simplifying the gameplay.

If you consider UT2k4 hard, they don't even try to get into Q3 or QW.

compared to CSS where you can kill anyone your second week of playing if you're lucky and get a headshot.

And yes a automated matching system like Battle.net is a wonderful dream for a fast paced FPS. Haha, like me starting a game 3 years late finding matches I stood a chance in wasn't so easy. I don't think too many players would have the patience to stick with it being slaughtered every game and rarely winning for about a month. Godlike bots were also worthless learning tools, they don't time any items and also switch to rox in long range LG battles.

Yeah, something where people with the same skill can play each other is a must. Severity needs to have this in order to not suffer from the Quake syndrome:

1) noob being owned 100 -4
2) noob disconnects and uninstalls the game to not play it again
3) noob goes to play Gears of War

I agree completly about the automated matchup system, I have made this argument before, and it would truly pwn. :)

Every game needs a noob scene and a rating/matchup system would keep people interested. It is doable in RTS, so why not in FPS? :x

I thought Q3 was easier, at least you could find noobs there. UT2004 DM, like Q4, has a higher percentage of competitive players in it, although some might make some silly argument that UT games are "less skilled" than Q3/QW.. ;P

You are right though, noobs are pretty sparse in ut2k4 1v1. I would only play like 1-2 other new (or really bad) players a week. Then when I got a little better maybe around March, I would have my closest games with TAM and TDM players that just didn't have much 1v1 experience. So they weren't even "noobs" they were just playing 1v1 since the other game types are rather dead. Now I can play pretty much anyone and keep scores close and even win except for the most experienced 1v1 players.

Still even at this point in my 1v1 learning process, automated match making would still be great. Imagine if every game played was likely to be a close one against another person around my skill. Right now the closest thing FPS has to this dream is www.purepressure.com

There are not enough UT2004 players on the system for them to add skill matching to the pickup 1v1 games, otherwise you'd wait for a very long time to get a game. But the system learns your skill by tracking stats and then uses that for things like seeding in tournaments and making fair teams in pickups for the team game types.

I think that with a new game like UT3 which they have already announced they will support might be the best hope. First of all there will be a large number of new players and reactivated players initially. If pure pressure advertises itself well, they could possibly get several thousand people on the service and that would definitely be enough to get automated skill matched games easily.

The best thing would of course be if Epic built a matchup / ranking system into the game, as UT3 needs a noob scene, and noobs aren't really that good at installing 3rd party software.

But optionally they could include this client like they did with gamespy of course.

No one plays Q4 for several reasons, UT sucks, you fail at playing Q3.

Very few people play Q4, but most of Q3's best players now play Q4, as I'm sure you are aware, leaving only noobs like you.

There are only 2 weapons that are actually used/important to use in UT2004. And they both serve the same function.

Care to elaborate? Sounds kinda strange to me considering the UT2004 weapons are almost boringly "well" balanced.

Shock rifle primary and lightning gun. With players who are capable of hitting 30 percent hitscan percentages and the giant overscaled maps, it's boring to watch and even more boring to play.

I agree 2k4 was boring, but if you're telling me flak/RL/bio are hardly used at all in 2k4 then look again.

Btw, my original argument was "UT weapons", not UT2k4 weapons, and on a different note; in Q3 the rocket launcher, imo, is overused.

I played about 20 1v1's yesterday to prepare for a tournament on pure pressure today. It gets pretty boring after the 10th game where a huge amount of each game is shaped basically on how much damage we do with hitscans.

When I first got the game, I started off abusing hitscans like most people do, usually accused of cheats because I was really good at it relative to the rest of my game. But in the end it payed off to use other weapons because I had to play smart, move better and learned to get good with all weapons. Now I despise all hit scan players.

It's annoying to play 1v1's where the deciding factor isn't all the things that are supposed to be deciding factors in 1v1, but rather how many times I can hit him, and he hit me with shock and LG. Not just annoying, but rather boring if you're beating the other person only because of your aim, or they're beating me only because of their aim.

The other weapons in UT2k4 are good. But the shock rifle has excessive knock back so you can keep people out of optimal range to use rockets, flak, etc. I also feel they're a tad weak, esp one rocket to the face doesn't kill a freshly spawned player.

I made this YTMND, it's humorous, I have 4hp, carry just the LG and shock, the other player is WAY better at 1v1 than me, etc.

It's why I threw UT in the recycle bin and play Quake instead.

Personally, it's more of a problem with the players than the game. I've seen plenty of nice exciting games where neither person has to shocktape to win. But once the other person starts going all hitscan, because of the open maps etc you're forced to hoard and use those weapons yourself to win. There is not enough opportunity for better positioning to overcome a person with a shock rifle and LG. My aim is good so I don't mind using hitscan, but it can be so boring when that is all the game is. I vastly prefer close combat with flak and rockets even if I'm worse at it, it's so much more fun.

Epic has to have learned from the mistakes in UT200x. Everything indicates UT3 is going to be much more about close combat than a cat mouse hitscan fest.

But I don't see any reason why the PS3 would have more to offer then the 360, even in the future. The 360 owns the shit out of ps3 game wise at the moment and will probably always do, as far as I know the only exclusive franchise on the PS3 will be Final Fantasy but I wouldn't be suprised if that would come to the 360 as well.

Microsoft has a shit load of money and during the xbox classic bought a lot of development companies and developers to create their own exclusive game base. And exclusive titles has always been the strength of the ps2 which now will be the strength of the 360.

Game wise its taste, i would buy the ps3 only for the 3 FFXIII titles. Besides that there are alot of ps3 exclusives that are bound to be good, ie metal gear solid 4. if u want a complete list of ps3 exclusives you need to look it up, there are some good ones.

i dont know much about the PS Home project, probably not very good, but maybe has some potential.

besides that the ps3's power is greater then the x360's, even now games claim to get better graphics (pro evo 7) and larger stories on the ps3, cause of the bigger capacity of the blu ray.

ok, ive got a bravia full hd lcd panel and ive got a blu ray player, i can tell u, the shadows are not pixelled and the quality is superior to dvd. i dont know where u get those claims, but it seems ur biased towards hddvd.

when the cores are gonna be fully functional, in 2 years or so, u will see where it leaves the x360.

Well Final Fantasy would be the only reason to buy a PS3 imo, but not for such a ridiculous price. What other exclusive titles would they have now Metal Gear Solid 4 is probably coming to 360 as well. Xbox has Halo, Forza, Gears of War just to name a few of the top titles.

I also think developers are much more willing to create 360 exclusive titles then PS3 exclusive titles. The PS3 appearantly is an awefull development platform, while the 360 much more like developing for PC. So why would a game studio make such a lot of effort to make a game for the PS3 and reach a smaller audience then they would when developing it for the 360. And while developing for the 360 be able to port it to the PC with much less effort, time and money spend then porting it from PS3 to PC.

The graphics aren't the factor that should make the difference, but the games and gameplay experience will. I don't know how PS3's online services will be but I do know Xbox live works really well and has a lot to offer. Eventually it will come down on the games and on that point I don't see PS3 'winning', expecially with Xbox having the favour of the developers.

I'm not biased towards HD-DVD, in fact I don't have any experience with either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies and I bet they both look amazing. I read stuff on the internet and I'm just stating several differences I've come across reading articles. Like I said eventually only time will tell.

and why are you so lame about blu ray? its a great medium in a console for a good price compared to stand alone players. the next betamax? i dont know if u noticed but atm blu ray is kicking hd dvd's ass. hard.

For instance HD-DVD quality is supposed to be better then Blu-Ray, because Blu-Ray uses the old MPEG2 codec where HD-DVD uses a new codec VC-1. The colors in Blu Ray are reported to be less bright then HD-DVD and shadows appear to have pixels.

Also Blu Ray is more expensive for comsumers and movie companies, even stores in the UK are appaerantly boycotting Blu Ray for it's high prices.

Besides all this HD-DVD is supported by the DVD Forum (www.dvdforum.org), with a members list containing tons of consumer electronics companies.

Time will tell though, but there is lots of signals that Blu Ray can very well become the next Betamax or UMD.
