The World Series of Video-Games (WSVG) crowned its first champion in Louisville Kentucky this weekend in the form 19 year old Italian, Alessandro “
Stermy” Avallone. His victory over Rafik “
LoSt-CaUsE” Bryant marks the first major tournament win for
Stermy since his breakout last year playing Painkiller in the
CPL World Tour.
Although renowned for his talent in Painkiller, his Quake 3 performance of past drew little attention internationally and in turn raised doubt over his potential success in Quake 4. And because he had not participated in any serious competitions in Quake 4, which was released last October, he had done nothing to silence his critics… Until Lanwar.
Stermy advanced to the grand finals beating top American talent such as
cl0ck,
cha0ticz, and
socrates_ and dropped only one map to fellow European
forever. To contrast,
LoSt-CaUsE had lost one match against
socrates_ in two straight maps in the semi-final and went into tie-breaker maps with
destrukt,
nomadic,
fatal1ty, and
socrates_ again in the Consolation final. Although
LoSt-CaUsE did not advance with such dominance, his wins over
Fatal1ty and
socrates_, and his first set win over
Stermy in the final deserve major acclaim. With the exception of
Mojo, they both proceeded through the tournament playing the best of what North America, China, and the Netherlands has to offer; these two did not get through because of an easy bracket.
With the WSVG running two tournaments on the same weekend, one at Lanwar in Kentucky and the other at Dreamhack in Sweden, the best Quake 4 player is still yet to be determined. But as the tournament season is upon us, it will not be long until the results of a single international tournament point us in the right direction. And if Lanwar is anything to go by, the season will be rife with surprises.
