Well those little things that happened 200 years ago etc. have a big impact on how we live in Britain today. Our whole system of government, law, blah, etc. is directly influenced by achievements in the past and therefore it is quite easy to feel proud of the country you "belong" to's past due to it's influence on your life now.

Is there anywhere else in Europe id rather be? Sure, Italy, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Holland to name a few. We had the worlds finest tube system when it was built and our taxis and buses were second to none, but thats the problem with this country it never goes forward, it always looks back on its past achievements and the government whine when we lose out on yet another contract to build new cars or aeroplanes. Yet in actual fact its cheaper, more efficient and has better build quality elsewhere in europe, not to mention the world. Trains are terrible, yet go to a country who started way after us (in technology terms), like sweden or holland for example and they KNOW how to run a public transport system.

Hell, id even take new yorks subway over the London underground. Thats just one tiny example of our failings as a country, never mind grass being greener on the other side, try grass IS green rather than pissed on yellow.

I'm not talking about a business trip or a holiday or even an extended stay of a few months.

I'm talking about actual living for years. Living with the people. Becoming part of their voting system, sticking around long enough to be considered a citizen and accepted, as opposed to being seen as someone on business. Affected by their politics, becasue only then can you really make a proper judgement.

It's easy to go and live in a foreign country for a short time and get wrapped up in the whole excitement and see it through rose tinted glasses and through the eyes of a foreigner. Plenty of money in your back pocket and a task that has to be completed.

It's hard to believe you've really experienced so many places to the degree I'm talking about, but if you can go into more detail then I'll apologise for my assumptions. But I just think its more to do with conflicting definitions, rather than my assumptions.

As for this country I agree it's annoying as of late, but that's down to a lot of factors. Some of the people. Immigration (having a biggest of impacts). Government. Over Crowding etc.

I tend to agree but without America. The results of that are "broken" by low population countries (E.g. Luxembourg) and they would all be pretty much the same (The European countries + Britain) biggest difference is culture.

I am actually pretty cynical as a person, so rose tinted glasses dont come into it, regardless of how long I stay in a country and regardless for what purpose.

Personally speaking, I dont need to spend years in a country to make up my own mind on its suitability to live there. Most of the countries I have stayed in for longer than a few weeks on holiday or business allow you to get a taste for most things. That alone gives most intelligent people a chance to make a reasonably sound decision if it would be suitable or not.

Its pretty easy to compare transport systems for instance, the local people, the rituals, religous aspects, food, way of life for most people without spending more than a few weeks doing it. Hell, in a week in china it basically meant I had to throw out all of my pre conceived (and I might add, internet reading knowledge) of the place as it is totally different to the way it is painted in the west, in a more positive way. Trust me, im more than cynical enough to be won over by a weeks stay somewhere, where I am working or paid to go. Ive spent a ludicrous amount of time in Paris for example and I hate the place, where as plenty of time in New York and I like it.

Its down to personal choice I guess and a degree of intelligence not to be over whelmed by a new country or experience and to say that I have to meet your criteria to decide whether this country sucks and another one is better to live in is just silly.

Oh and as for immigration in the UK, more the better really, they seem to get jobs, own their own property and businesses and generally do more to get on in life. Obviously there are a few who do it for the benefits, but thats no different to any other country, just ask Swedish people about immigration...

Plus you're forgetting the millions that simply come over here and do nothing but leach off the system.

The problem with the UK is that it's being watered down, as a result less people are caring about the country because many british people in certain parts of the UK (for example) london are being made to feel like Foreigners.

The impacts of that attitude alone are huge. If the UK wants to sort it self out they should chop down the amount of immigrants they allow in and only then for high skilled workers and then review everyone one benefits and force the Longterm leachers into employment, or some sort of work.
But not much chance of that when the general attitude in the uk is that for a lot of people they are better of not working.
Not when you consider some 3 bedroom house costs over a 100k and a lot would need to work the rest of their life just to end up with that?

The problem with the UK is that it's hellbent on the fairplay rule.
Try going to any of the other countries and saying, I don't have a job, but I would like to move here, get free accomodation and money every week.

Try going to Poland and doing that. See how many lol's you get:)

The problem with immigrants isn't that they are leeching off of the system (Yes some do but they are a minority) it's that they are filling jobs that we have people to fill already and thus are simply overcrowding the country and driving up unemployment.

I think the key to getting immigrants to be true citizens is to not treat them as immigrants, but real Swedes(or Brits or whatever), they will feel responsibility and identify themselves with the country.

If you go somewhere, try to join a group, but they shun you, but let you stay for free, would you rise to their defense in conflict or want to deal with them? But rather, if they welcome you with open arms and greet you as a member of their society, and not give you special treatment, and you take to these people with joy, will you not feel a responsibility to be kind in return and defend your newfound friends?

No wonder immigrants don't give shit if they get put into concrete stalinist population crates in some suburb, with noone around from the nation in question. The native population become strangers and you don't identify with them, especially not with the guy hiring you saying that you won't be needing to bring your doctors certificate to the interview for a cleaning job.

My father is an immigrant(from the USA), and he certaintly identifies himself as a swede, and I've often seen him rise to defend Sweden in debate more vigorously and passionately than most swedes I've seen.

Whether or not he'd go to war is another issue, but I doubt he would, especially seeing as he refused to go to war in Vietnam and nearly got sent to jail in the process.

The Czech Republic is culturally one of the most desired places to live. Thats why so many expats live here, because they get Western pay but can enjoy a city as beautiful as Prague and women as beautiful... well... as Czechs :)
