j0k3r: Welcome :) first of all - please introduce yourself.

j4rno: hi! My name is Jarno Kyykkä and I'm 20 years old. I'm one of the few Finns, who play Quake 4. First time I started gaming seriously, was with CS - around 3-4 years ago. We were quite good untill we just got bored. Then I founded Quake 3 and started playing RA3, CTF and a bit of TDM. Last year I was in the army, so I couldn't practise much. I got into dueling maybe ~6 months ago and I started to practice it more seriously, and in Q4 it has been all duels :P.

Well then, let's start. I wanted to make few first questions, about your past in gaming. I know, that you "tasted" titles like Quake 3 (with clans like team.alpha, PolarBears) and UT(?) (with Destination Skyline), before you started playing Quake 4. What clans did you play in before, and what did you achieve?

Well, as I said, I played CS first, our clan [oath] won Finnish CS championship (or something like that) at year 2002-2003, and after that we were in some CPL qualifier in Sweden, which didn't went to well. I've never played UT for DSky, I was in their Q3 squad. Quake III was never so serious for me, just some fun with me and my mates. I still knew that I had some skills in it, but back then I wasn't that interested to practice hard enough. During the year 2004, I played Q3 TDM with clan deluxe, which is probably best Q3&Q4 TDM team in Finland (not so much tho;)). Nowadays, dueling is the thing for me, TDM is just for fun. Latest achievement is maybe the first place Q4 tournament, sponsored by Creative, wich was held at Cafe Level7 @ Helsinki. There were all Finnish Q4 players around, so it was quite fun.

Right, what made you to start playing Quake 4 then?

It was obvious for me to leave Q3 and start playing Q4. The tournaments, bigger scene (is it?), and golden opportunity to show what I can do in game! In future maybe competing in professioanal level, all sounds so fun and great experience. I really didn't believe that I would do this well in EuroCup and other tournaments. Now I just got to find a good team and start practising hardcore and try to get nice placing in big tournaments.

Can you tell us about how do you feal at LAN tournaments - are they better for you to compete, or you prefer the online ones? I asked you about it, becouse as it says at your homepage - you didn't play much games at LAN, most of your matches were played online.

I hate playing online, where I have over 20ms, you have to change your whole style and start rail bitching and forget about the LG. Can't do anything with it, with a little higher ping. So I definately prefer LAN game. When I practice, I usually play with 5-7ms, so it isn't that big difference, comparing to 0-1ms. Hard to find a place to practise at LAN... or you can do it in a netcafe, but I'm not interested in paying few euros, to get the ping down by few ms.

What about CPL Winter - there was only one player from Finland - Beam, who didn't won much as he was placed 25th-32nd. Why didn't you compete in it?

Well, the main reason is that I don't have a sponsor, but even if I had, I was in army. It would have been hard to get in proper shape considering that other players was practising 24/7 and I was jumping in forests with a rifle gun :).

About Q4 duel EuroCup: When you won your first match vs mess, you made a suprise for a lot of people with your skills. Next, first you've lost vs toxic, which was pritty obvius by then, but next time you've met him, you managed to win 2:1, showing nice skills again. Plus I have to mention the match vs av3k, which you've won aswell. The one, who stopped you in playoffs, was winz - that was a very nice and equal match aswell. Are you satisfied after this EC, or your plans were to achieve a lot more?

Thinking now - the EC was a big success for me, I got my name known a little bit more. But also, I could have done better I think. I had a little bit of bad luck vs. winz, cuz my routing was f***ed up after the first map, so we had to play in Germany, but later during the tournament, winz has proved that he is a very good player. So to sum it up: EC went well but I will certainly do better in future!

And what about the matches I've mentioned?

The last match vs SK|tox was quite fun to play. Both picked fleet and both are quite good at it. So fleets went 1-1. Galang as a last map was a success for me, at the start tox had lead something 7-6 frags to zero. Then I got control of the map and was able to keep it long enough and catch ~15 frags and it was enough for me to win the match.

Both matches against polish guys, mess and av3k, were played with relatively high ping. Match vs mess was played quite soon after q4 release, there were sg bugs and other shit in it still. I don't really remember the score but if I remember right it was quite easy win for me. Against av3k I won phrantic (which is a miracle) and managed to secure fleet also. Still believe that high ping matches shouldn't be looked too much, quite a different game with 40-50 ping.

As You said, You are playing in Q4 clan - deluxe. You guys allready played in EuroCup and you've lost most of the matches at your group, winning only two of them. Is deluxe the clan, you're planning to stay in for longer time?

Clan Deluxe is friend only clan, and its based only on TDM. We have played maybe less than 10 TDM practice matches in Q4, and none after the last EC match. So you can't consider clan deluxe so competitive TDM clan, we are here just for fun. I'm staying in deluxe TDM team, but in duel there's different teams and so on. Atm I'm not in any 'duel team' but there might be some news coming up.

Then I must ask, are You planning to find yourself any multiclan to play for?

I got some things under discussion, so you can take that as a yes :)

I assume then, that You can't tell me, which one is it yet? ;)

Since no contracts have been accepted yet, I'm staying quiet ;)

Ok, let's move on further, which incomming tournaments are are you or your clan planning to compete in?

If things go well, I get sponsors and such things, surely the whole WT and of course any other smaller tournaments around Scandinavia.

Which parts of Quake 4 do You like, and make You want to play this game, and which things You dislike in this game?

The movement is great in Quake 4, I just love crouch sliding. I think people are dissing Q4 too much, sure it has now some minor bugs and so on, but still its very good game to play. Demo bugs and no GTV... they can be fixed (I hope!). But the game part of q4 is just great imo. Only thing that I really dislike inside the game is the freaking random shotgun spead, damage is way too random at certain distances.

Let's move to few short questions now - RL or LG?

LG

Wide or tight map?

TDM or duel?

Sport or e-sport?

E-sport of course

Alcohol or Juice?

Alchohol mixed with juice

Well then, thanks a lot for the interview Jarno, good luck in future gaming and ofcours - life :).
