TEK9 previews Dreamhack Winter (60 comments)
Posted by crow- @ 06:24 CST, 25 November 2009 - iMsg
TEK-9.org previews the upcoming QuakeLive tournament at Dreamhack Winter in Jönköping, Sweden. The feature includes a detailed rundown of the top contenders, from fan favourite Russia Anton "Cooller" Singov to unpredictable dark horse Poland Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski and more in-between. A quick taster can be found below...

LAN form: impressive until the semis as per usual

The great fox bandwagon rolled on in Dubai with another stunning start to an event that ultimately ended in disappointment for the Swede. Victory over rapha in the group stages proved that he has the talent but elimination at the hands of Cypher the following day looked to be all too straightforward for the Belarusian. If there's one thing that fox will have hoped to develop playing alongside new mousesports teammate Cooller it will be the mental side of his game, an attribute you'd have expected to be strong in a player with the Swede's years of experience.

fox's group stage tie with av3k looks set to be a classic, with two diametrically opposed play styles on show. av3k's offensive, risk-taking play could cause problems for the precise and calculating fox, who prefers only to fight at a time and place of his choosing. With the pressure off, you'd expect the mousesports player to hold the advantage but, if his Polish opponent is back in form, fox's efforts on home soil might stutter even earlier than expected.

Prediction: Heart says top two but head suspects he'll drop out a round or two beforehand

You can read the full preview on TEK-9.org.

dkt: "My goal is always to win" (154 comments)
Posted by swine @ 14:10 CST, 24 November 2009 - iMsg
An American trio of Quake players will participate at the Quake Live tournament at the DreamHack Winter event. One of them is Brian "dkt" Flander, who managed to show a good offline performance at the QuakeCon 2009. Fragster.de spoke with him about the IEM American Finals, the upcoming DreamHack and the American Quake scene.
Who will be the toughest opponent in Jönköping?
dkt: Probably Cypher. He is a great player. He has very solid aim and positioning and his mental game is underrated. There are many European players who are very good. I think Cooller will be better at this tournament than he was in Dubai and I think fox/DaHanG will also be very good

Spart1e, who managed to beat you twice at QuakeCon, is also attending at DreamHack. Can you take him down this time in his home country just like he did to you?
dkt: Hopefully, he is a very good player, but I feel I'm better than I was at QuakeCon. I don't know how much he has practiced or anything, but it would be fun to play against him again.

When Dreamhack Winter 2009 is just days away the seeds have finally been made and released for both Quake Live and Quake World.

Unfortunately a few players dropped out of the tournament. PURRI and bodzo couldn't make it of various reasons, time and money being the major ones. They were replaced by the players who were next in line: the former Dreamhack Quake admins Sweden Dronar and Sweden SobriuS.

ZeroQl had troubles getting a visa and was replaced by the runner up in the Serbian QL Qualifier: Serbia rmd! Sweden Åke Vader and Sweden lakso couldn't make it to the Quake World tournament either. Åke Vader because of work and lakso because of school. Both of them were replaced by the players next in line: France vo1ce and Sweden snapcase.

Pros vote Dreamhack to be AGP Sanctioned (174 comments)
Posted by Streetrunner @ 08:12 CST, 23 November 2009 - iMsg
The Association of Gaming Professionals recently held a vote with its Pro Members on whether Dreamhack should be approved or not for AGP Sanctioning. The vote was based on the very late details released of the tournament like prizemoney, if it is to be LAN or server based (Quake Live), and monitors and computers used. All these things are factored into decision making of if a LAN tournament is to be AGP Sanctioned or not because it is not fair to those players traveling to book the travel details for such a tournament early only to find out the prize money is very low or doesn’t exist, instead giving hardware, for an example. Dreamhack has a stellar record of paying prize money on time and holding very well ran tournaments that are consistent, which plays an important role in this vote as well.

The vote required a majority vote and was elected to be AGP Sanctioned. The point breakdown is listed below. Usually the penalty in AGP Ranking points for such a late detail release would put this tournament at 500 points for 1st. However, because it is a 32 player, non invite tournament, and that most North American players are attending, it will be treated at 1000. Look for their streaming schedule very soon.

1 - 1000
2- 600
3/4 - 360
5/8 - 180
9/16 - 90
17/32 - 45

Tomorrow the AGP will be releasing details on the election for European player representation.
