Clan arena didn’t ruin quake or its popularity (11 comments)
Posted by gojira_ @ 20:33 CDT, 18 August 2018 - iMsg
Clan arena did not ruin quake. How did this POV come about? Or how about ctf being just another mod that “separates” the population? How? Last I checked ctf is still a highly desirable game type. If a game is unpopulated people will generally apply practicality to the situation and join simpler game types. That’s it.

The only one fucking reason the player base gets separated is devs failing to produce quake equivalent with all the bells and whistles. The bells and whistles do not include capped speed, limited game types, limited cfg and/or console commands, et cetera. They DO include every major mod previous quake games had fully restored and available, new and old maps freely available (I would even pay a subscription for those two). And how about including ability to modify and contribute to the game? Both public and corporate run servers was a worthy idea as well from QL. Basically everything previous quake game had to offer. And we won’t leave our coop gameplay either.

That is what would have kept the community together.

100% clean from drugs (177 comments)
Posted by gojira_ @ 21:32 CDT, 2 July 2017 - iMsg
I finally wizened up and put down the last addiction I've held onto, ironically the first I started on when I was 13 y/o. Marijuana. I quit booze beginning of 2017, quit nicotine a year before that. Honestly, the pot was one of those habits I never thought much about as a real issue but it's become a serious problem for me. Even after 2 years of having a solid exercise routine, I still couldn't go a day without having major anxiety and panic attacks. Couldn't duel for shit, obviously.

So here's to sobriety. I'm on week 2 and feeling at ease although there's still bumps here and there. I'm lucky not to have stumbled down a much more dangerous path with drug addiction. With the support of friends, family, my wife, skies the limit. Sure, I'm 31 and wasted much of my time gaming and generally wasting precious time and health, but that's my path. I found my way out of the cloud.

For those of you that I have been a bothersome fool towards, please accept my deepest apologies. Thank you for your time esr.

The odd bugs of steam QL (61 comments)
Posted by gojira_ @ 23:36 CDT, 14 March 2016 - iMsg
Seems no one cared to mention these strange bugs that came with Steam QL.

Sticky hitboxes:
When brushing by another player's hitbox there is an odd sticky feeling. Kinda like lag. Its annoying. I'd love an explaination. Obviously this bug never existed in pre-steam or any other quake title.
Edit: Apparently this bug has existed since 2012.

Hitting your head on invisible ceiling:
When hugging a wall after a rocket jump or a jump pad, you'll frequently hit your head on an invisible ceiling just before reaching the top floor/platform. This bug is very frustrating and shouldn't exist.

Grenades sticking to top of hitbox:
This is the least problematic nuance but again, it's a bug that shouldn't exist. You can now shoot a grenade at the head of an unmoving opponent and instead of exploding, as it should, it just sticks and spins until timed explosion. Kinda odd, and I really don't see why this isn't addressed.
3dit: also has existed since dawn ql.

Admittedly, I've posted some trash. But this is frightening.

http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php...re-PUSSIES

As posted by the alias "eatdiarrhea":

The QL Team are PUSSIES
Hi all, MichaelJackson here.

Because I've constantly called out id Software for their disrespect of the initial fanbase and the original game, while announcing that I was fed up with their nonsense and that other players shouldn't tolerate it, turns out that they now have a fetish for banning me off of their forums, because they do not like that there exists someone who's not going to stand for their crap.

Well, unfortunately for them, I still use the forums about every other day under countless different names, even after they IP banned me (I use a browser called Tor that disguises my IP address, allowing me to bypass bans). I wanted to take the time out to say to you id Software, that your bans are essentially pointless and you'll never get rid of me, as I'll just keep creating new accounts. When a game developer makes a terrible decision, I am going to call them out for it. No ban is going to stop me.

Face reality, you've made some disastrous choices and you know how it destroyed the game on a competitive level, and you were completely unwilling to fix it. And at the same time, you were unwilling to hear the criticism and the outrage. That's not how it works, id. And if you do anything like this again, the pattern will only repeat. I will continue to call you out on your own website.

On the positive side of things, it looks like we (mostly) won the battle. One of my sources has confirmed that the next update will probably see the removal of loadouts by default. Although unified ammo boxes and item timers will remain, at least the one main thing that completely destroyed this former masterpiece of a game is gone. Now we should continue the fight, and maybe we'll also say goodbye to the other trash as well.

My next battle will be DOOM 4: turns out they're adding loadouts, progression, and a 2-weapon limit to multiplayer. I may not be able to severely damage its sales, but I may be able to help ensure a faster death, if I gather enough supporters. I will only halt the plan if at least half the default servers are without these flaws. Lemme know if you want to take part.

Anyway, I'll continue to post as always. Feel free to ban this account id, seeing as I can simply make another.

I've become very much a non gamer these days. There are many reasons but mostly it's due to quakes decline. I'd love to get sucked back into it. If there were certain changes, particularly an increased population for other game modes or even more variety with modding gamemodes I'd come back and like a junky looking for his next fix.

What desirable updates would you wish for?

Many memories come from our beloved LAN happenings. Perhaps you have a story to tell - be it funny, embarrassing or outright rage inducing. Perhaps you don't have any interesting accounts other than fond memories.

Well here's my story. Just good memories. I was lucky enough to have a best friend whose father was a network admin and he was (like all computer lab guys during the late 90s) very into doom and quake, eventually settling for CS as his main game. He had built a few computers for his kids and a few more just for himself (answering machine/ server) and he was delighted to have his sons friends over for pc game binges. There were many late nights and many more cans of mountain dew.

Of course, after CS was adopted by steam we went from playing our small lan games to just joining our favorite server. Best times were playing on the machine behind the old man listening to him stop himself from cussing up a storm to spare my ears. He never got that way unless his son killed him.

Casual day of the week themed server
Northwest America may be interested in this announcement. I'm going to be running a plethora of casual game modes for each day of the week. Starting tomorrow. I hope this style server will give new and old players alike something refreshing.

The schedule as of now:
-Mystery Mod Mondays (random custom modifications like gaunt 1flagctf)
-Torpid F-T Tuesdays
-Domination Humpdays
-Throttling A&D Thursdays
-Ferkin Classic TDM Fridays
-Salty Red Rover Satudays
-Sabbath Harvest Sundays.

The schedule and gamemodes are likely going to readjust after time. I was also considering skipping weekends and run my typical hal9000 nostalgic clan arena server.

Suggestions and moderators needed.

Location is always going to be Seattle. Weapon load outs will be avoided in most game modes. The server will have a bot for community admins. The bot won't help with balancing because the game modes aren't supported by qlranks but customized elo can be set up to match a players dm elo. The bot will be used mostly to keep things civil. All player skill levels are welcomed and to be treated with respect.

Cya in the pixel world.

Changes to weapon dmg overview (26 comments)
Posted by gojira_ @ 03:31 CST, 26 January 2015 - iMsg
This subject has been beat to death. But time has passed and I enjoy hearing other peoples perspective on esr. You guys are pretty humorous as well as intelligent.

All the weapons in quake are situation specific and breath life into quake as much as the fluidity of movement. The tier level of weapons was essential for single player. Each new weapon you found made you feel much more empowered. In multiplayer it was all about acquiring the most powerful weapons asap, and in the QW days the weapons were the ingredients for a lethal adrenaline dance like no other game. The lightning gun and rocket launcher reigned supreme. Rockets hit for a possible 150dmg per second. LG could hit for a whopping 300dmg per second.
http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/Lightning_Gun

Then of course, our beloved railgun came into the scene which changed the dynamic, but in a good way. No longer could a person run and hide without the likeliness of taking a 100 dmg blow from the railgun. The railgun added a more authoritative stance to the polished aimers of the game. It's cooldown made for an effective vulnerability but it dished out when used wisely and confidently. A new situation specific weapon that was very much welcomed.

As most of us know, the weapons have taken a bit of change over the years but mostly in the QL years. Q3 had an 8dmg per bolt which fired 20 bolts per second, a maximum of 160dmg a second. This was an extreme change but the lg was still as effective as QW. One might say QW's weapons were too lethal, and that's a fair point. I personally loved QW's method but Q3 was refreshing change considering it's rate of fire being much quicker. This was the trend that was followed since, faster rate of fire, less cool down time and less dmg.

QL's method isn't something I could label as wonderful, nor do I dislike it absolutely. I'm in between. Nevertheless, I find myself longing for 7dmg LG and I miss the lethal feeling of 100dmg railgun with longer cooldown. Seemed more beefy that way.

At the 30% accuracy thresh-hold you empty just about all your LG bolts into one opponent. I think newcomers feel pushed away by this. They rage almost always after getting dominated by strong LG players. That's been common since Q3, but it hasn't always taken so long to be dominated; it's dramatic. Quicker death = less time to feel indignation. Longer death = over dramatic and more time to feel helpless and frustrated. Again, players with strong LG have always raged newcomers, but i can't help but feel that it's nerf was a bad decision for both perspectives.

There is much more I could say about other weapons (I miss ssg) that came and went but I'll leave it there. How do you guys feel about the changes to weapons over the years?

Personally couldn't care less. I took a year off and came back to a steam release that further drowned the potential this project has. There may still be hope, but maybe not. You can't have an abortion after nine months of pregnancy.

Your move now. Better do something incredible. Good luck.

Where are all you old ctfs players at?

Wolven has had a bit of success with his Amsterdam server and his website up above might be useful for gathering more veterans. It's busy every night and sometimes most of the day. His server settings are as close to 3wave CTFS as it can possibly be. JAQS is gettin some action too.

I got a server up in Seattle, WA. Hoping to drag some people in. Had a few 3v3s already. Newcomers seem to like it. Seen some old faces too. Warning, a veteran in CTFS, is starting an east coast server tomorrow.

Anyhow, just spreading the word! Would be glad to see some more action in this old mod.

Thoughts on netcode and matchmaking (18 comments)
Posted by gojira_ @ 22:53 CST, 13 December 2014 - iMsg
Personally I am not in favour of QL's netcode instaunlagged conceptual crap. Remember the days when lag was a personal responsibility? You know, back when a person could lag out all they wanted but didn't expect others to accommodate for their spiky ping?

Now about matchmaking. Matchmaking is a kind of euphemism in quake if you think about it. Competition is unfair. Winner wins, loser walks away in shame. Life by itself is offensive. So when I think about matchmaking I think math. We don't exactly have a big community like we did in the old days... so why don't we just stop crying about matchmaking?

Yeah, its tough. Our beloved games are turning into shit and the corporate whores in the capitalist gangbang can't help themselves from scraping that crap they deemed as "good thinking" from the bottom of the barrel.

So here we are people. What now?

XP

(Edited because I said instagib when what I really meant was instaunlagged)

Seems the people in the quake community have all been taking swings at a giant stump. The tree was downed in the early 2000s. Let's just face it. We all know what's wrong with quake nowadays. There's no need for debate.

Quake started many people off in the gaming field. Programmers were given free reign to mod their hearts out. Like wise map makers and modelers were able to utilize anything they could imagine. The sky box was the limit.

Nowadays we all feel disheartened by what's become of quake and fpsers in general. It's become nothing more than a business model that, like a skilled player, exploits the hell the community.

But all is not lost. Quake is still very much a diamond in the rough. And why not take a moment to appreciate what's good about QL and how much potential the concept itself has for expanding. We all know what it would take.

It was the community that gave quake longterm life. Id was very intelligent to give us that freedom. The taste made our community relentless with creativity. I believe one day someone will get it right again simply because that kind of business model truly satisfied customers.

Enough with wasting energy on hating the dev team. There's many reasons ql hasn't living up to our expectations. If one stops to think about it becomes obvious that the dev team was simply taking orders from bigwigs who were always disconnected from the good ol days. They were a tiny team assigned to a questionable side project, given very little to work with and likely had very little time to do the job. They did well enough considering the tools they had. It's easy to point out the flaws after the fact.

So in essence, the point of this thread is to take a step back. Think about what a still right about this gem. Take pride in being involved in this wild ride. Our community is restless, and that's fuel for the fire. Quake is still a diamond and always will be. It's only a matter of time before the tools are handed back to the community. Perhaps it won't be for awhile, nothing is certain. But you can be certain that no one has forgotten.

For now though, just remember that we still have a shelf of all the titles that pushed the boundaries and sparked something enormous inside us.
Pun intended.
