2D Demo Viewer Reborn (50 comments)
Posted by myT @ 01:51 CDT, 4 July 2016 - iMsg
The 2D demo viewer has come back to life! The code is all new, and here are the biggest differences compared to the old program:
- all Quake 3 and Quake Live demo formats are supported, from dm3 to dm_91
- no longer using Qt, the Windows version requires Direct3D 11 and the Linux version uses the GLFW library
- heat maps and some other stuff :)
- so far, I've worked on this new viewer alone

As stated on bethblog.com, id Software is set to open new offices in Frankfurt, Germany:
As part of our continued global expansion, ZeniMax Media has opened (and is actively hiring for) a new technology development studio in Frankfurt – home to our German publishing operations. This team, an extension of id Software, will focus their efforts on idTech for DOOM and other titles under development at ZeniMax-owned studios.
You can also look at the ZeniMax job seeking page and see id Software Germany being listed.

q3mme 1.7 beta builds (22 comments)
Posted by myT @ 19:12 CDT, 9 June 2015 - iMsg
Hello, fellow q3mme users.

I am hosting my own q3mme builds.

There, you will find a .zip file containing q3mme (the data, docs and binaries) and 2 folders with .pk3 files to add in the mme folder for changing or fixing various stuff.

Anyone working with CPMA demos should absolutely get this: CPMA explosions fix.

Now, those builds incorporate of all entdark's changes from his q3mme repository (found here) up to January 7 (last commit date as of now).

A detailed list of changes and help for the console variables and commands are to be found in the docs folder.

To those interested: have fun with it! :-)

EDIT: I am now hosting the source code on GitHub

Uber MME Muxer (8 comments)
Posted by myT @ 19:00 CDT, 15 April 2015 - iMsg
Uber MME Muxer (UMM) is a program for Windows that (hopefully) makes it easy for moviemakers to batch process Q3MME's output to create .avi files.
Installation and set-up details are covered extensively (including additional download links and other explanations) in the README.

After a 17 months hiatus...
- Some code changes were finally made (bug fixes, new features): changelog
- The project is now hosted on GitHub
- There's a much more readable README

Casters opinions wanted (2D viewer) (16 comments)
Posted by myT @ 22:52 CST, 12 February 2015 - iMsg
Dear Quake 3 and Quake Live casters,

I'm creating this thread to gather your opinions on a few specific points.

First, if you've never heard of the old 2D viewer project, please take a look at this ESR thread: http://www.esreality.com/post/2297844/2ddemoviewer01released/

Here are my questions for you:
1. If you had a 2D demo viewer that would play back dm_90 demos "live" (with some latency, more on that later), would you be interested in using it? Would you want to use it for yourselves (say on a screen whose content isn't captured in your stream) so you can better inform your viewers with talk or would you want to show the viz. to your viewers?
2. What kind of latency do you think is tolerable for viz. and/or general info (text messages)?
3. Assuming you would want to display the viz. as a small quad somewhere on top of the first-person view in your stream, would you be able to set up your stream so that the audio/video of Quake/commentary are delayed by a fixed amount of time and thus the result well sync'd (i.e. first-person and 2D view are in sync)?

Here are some latency measurements I just did for maximum latency. Of course, depending on what happens in game and where you stand, results will change. I made several measurements for each case and share the ranges I obtained, but what we're really interested in is the worst case scenario.

So it seems that with a delay manually set to 2.5-3s for TDM and CTF games, we should be able to play back demos robustly.

I also thought of some other things that might help the caster make sense of what is happening in TDM/CTF:
- text displaying who has quad/regen/bs right now
- text displaying who has which flag
- text displaying which player took the last RA/quad/regen/bs
- text displaying which player killed the last quad/bs runner

I also think that for the offline mode, being able to jump at any time in the demo and having the option to generate for e.g. a heat map would be most useful for post-match analysis.

Please note that I haven't (re-)started the project yet.

Your thoughts?

Cmd-line demo cutter for dm_90 files (20 comments)
Posted by myT @ 20:03 CDT, 6 October 2014 - iMsg
Hello, fellow Quake 3 and Quake Live players.

As you may know, there are GUI utilities to cut demo files like QLDT and UDT (for protocols 68 and 73). WolfcamQL recently added protocol 90 support. But if you want to cut a demo with it, you have to play it back, then do /record and /stoprecord. QLDT doesn't have protocol 90 support yet and neither did UDT... until now.

What's this about then? What I present you with right now is a command-line demo cutting tool for demo cutting (no analysis features). It's a temporary thing until I can update the main library and GUI utility. It's a brand new codebase and I intend to make lots of changes, so integrating all of it will take a while. We can use this as an opportunity to both fill the gap for a protocol 90 demo cutter and for extensive testing of the core cutter before the GUI version gets upgraded.

EDIT: The main GUI tool now supports the new code base!

UberDemoTools Cutter - Major Bugfix (6 comments)
Posted by myT @ 10:11 CST, 9 December 2012 - iMsg
If you don't know about UDT, please read this post. I just wanted to share with you that I finally managed to fix a major issue in the demo cutter code.

This bug would cause some output demos to have some invisible enemies, events that would happen in rapid-fire succession instead of only happening once, etc. If you've seen any of these or some other weird stuff, I'd advise you to grab the latest version and if possible, to send me the original demo and the start and end times you used. The more test demos I have for validation, the better I can make sure code changes made to the cutter don't break anything that worked previously.
