UK ISP Recommendations (Edinburgh) (14 comments)
Posted by Something @ 01:17 CST, 21 December 2018 - iMsg
Good Day Folks,

After a very, very, very long time, I should be finishing university next year, and will finally have some time to get back into gaming again, which I'm very much looking forward to!

I haven't looked into ISP's at all in the past seven or eight years, if anyone has any information/advice/experience for/about anything below, that'd be massively, massively appreciated:

Decent/reliable sources for ISP ratings.

I am so out of touch, anything that better explains the various technologies/services currently available. I'm aware of the acronyms for FTTC/FTTP, but that's essentially as far as my knowledge goes: getting gigabit FTTP seems to be the ultimate dream from the little that I've read, but I'd imagine in most scenarios is likely untenable. The more information the better, I work in electronics/hardware, but I have no experience/knowledge/information about networking/ISP's, though am keen to learn as much as possible.

I would be willing to pay good money (60 to 80 GBP if required) for a stable connection/good pings, and honestly the maximum bandwidth I'd require would be to stream 4K content, but anything over and above of that for the future would be great to have. Another thing that would be important is to be able to forward some ports for a couple of older games I hope to play (Forged Alliance Forever uses peer to peer..), and the option to be able to use my own modem/router would be a huge plus.

Anyone's experiences with UK ISP's as of late for ping-stability/packet loss/throttling and consistency/changes during peak time would be most appreciated; I'm up in Edinburgh, if anyone has any recommendations/experience, that'd be awesome to hear!

Hope you're all having a good festive season, and life is treating you well

Cheers :-)

Regarding Evil and his timeouts... (205 comments)
Posted by Something @ 15:15 CST, 22 December 2014 - iMsg
Was just watching the December League Grand Final, and evil pulls out yet another timeout.

The intent is clear.

Do you consider this behavior acceptable? Should there be a punishment for this? Frankly, its just a cunt thing to do.

Regarding the Guard stream debacle (204 comments)
Posted by Something @ 12:56 CDT, 29 May 2013 - iMsg
The current rules do not seem sufficient.

What are your thoughts on solving this issue?

Mine are:

Tell the players to man up and not be paranoid; I doubt what guard is insinuating is occurring. If other people believe it to be true, have an admin join the skype channel used by the casters/agent + ash.

Give the players the right to enforce a "Demo protocol". Each player is allowed to say no streamers on server, I want to force demo protocol. The demos of both players pov is sent to the cup admin, which is then sent out to the streamers to stream that way. This could also allow all games to be casted if some were played at the same time.

What do you think?

Stream VODS; High CPU usage (15 comments)
Posted by Something @ 09:37 CST, 15 January 2013 - iMsg
Am having difficulty playing the faceit sunday cup vods; every 3 to 10 seconds the video stutters and pauses, making it unwatchable.

When playing back the vods, my cpu usage goes well over 90% continually whilst watching these vods.

I know flash has been unnecessarily cpu heavy for quite a good time now, but this is a new level for me.

Running latest version of flash and firefox.

The same error occurs when using chrome, ie, opera etc. Oddly, live streams are fine, it's just the vods.

Is it possible to run an older version of flash in a light weight browser? Anyone else having similar problems or have found a workaround?

My pc is getting a bit long in the tooth now:
Win7 Pro 64Bit, latest updates
Core 2 Quad q6600, running at 2.8Ghz
4GB DDR2
8800gtx
128GB Crucial M4 SSD

I would have pointed to my CPU (struggles with a lot of the higher resolution frag movie files these days, even on media player classic), however due to it running the live stream perfectly..there must be a a driver hitch, a silly setting enabled....or are the latest flash updates just that badly done?

Supermarket adventure; mild embarrasment (16 comments)
Posted by Something @ 11:08 CST, 15 November 2012 - iMsg
I just (mildly) embarrassed myself at the supermarket. Only a little.

Here is am excerpt of the escapade:

I went to Morrisons with the intention of buying a 2-pack of peshwari naans for my £2 curry-in-a-micro-box dinner. The 2-pack costs £1.75.

Upon entering; I saw a DVD bargain box (everything in it, £2!!!) next to the checkout; I then made this noise:

You know when you see another family member or friends toddler walk into something, or fall over? You go: *deep-loud-hearable-inhale* "HuuuH" *silent exhale* in shock?

I made this noise when I saw said DVD box; an old lady turned around and looked at me with a grimace that said "the fuck is he on?", and then slowly turned away shaking her head, as if to say "what is it with kids. Pff."

And the rest of the people in line for that checkout. Anyways.

I couldn't even delve to half-depth in this bargain box; but here's what I picked up:

The latest (brilliantly terrible) Rambo: WITH HIS PROPELLOR. Nuff said.

"The Debt"; in 1964, Mossad agents captured a Nazi war-criminal; however, said Nazi escaped, so they fake his death and return to their country as heroes. 30 years later, the war criminal returns wanting to confess his sins. They must assassinate him to preserve their lives built upon this lie, as well as the country's history. For £2, wht not?!

"Alexander: Directors Cut" With Colin Farrel, Angelina Jolie AND Anthony Hopkins in it; it must have been high budget and should be at least worth a watch for the special effects alone. Anthony Hopkins is Anthony Hopkins, right?!

"Solomon Kane" Looks like an awful film with some decent fight scenes and action; hopefully a laugh-worthy plot and depth-less characters included!

"Vantage Point" An (these days) old "classic"; a decent drama about the story of the Presidents assassination from 8 different viewpoints. With the story slowly unfolding, the tension building, the picture becomes clear, and then it has a twist right at the end? That's what I recall from watching it as a kid; but with Dennis Quad and Sigourney Weaver (to name a few) in it; I imagine it will be entertaining/dramatic enough.

"Piranha 3D" Need I say more? Surely a terrible film, with rofl worthy acting; bikini's galore and a (hopefully) retarded plot. High hopes for this one.

"Crank" (first one); a staple terrible Statham movie; seen the second, hoping for more of the same with the first.

and

"Prowl, the hunt is on"; what looks to be a horror movie in Piranha 3D's vain; retarded teenagers get lost in some abandoned wood factory in hick country and presumably die due to immense retardation.

All for £2 each!!! I feel my earlier squeal of shock/delight was justified. Scrambling through the bargain bin head deep, perhaps not.

Combined with assorted Pringles, Pepsi Max (it was £1 for a 2L bottle! HOW can you say no?!), Minstrels, Chocolate M&M's and Smarties Cookies (one must be prepared for upcoming movie nights); the sum total for my voyage came to £34.94

This was a short story about how £1.75 intentions got ruined by one, sole, DVD bargain bin.

Damn my temptation!

(Posted due to boredom; waiting for flatmates to fuck-off out of the kitchen, and my pc is rendered useless for the time being due to handbrake encoding BBT and The Walking Dead, Season 2)

8800GTX Intermittent POST (HELP!!) (16 comments)
Posted by Something @ 10:13 CST, 8 November 2012 - iMsg
:(

It's my 8800GTX; first problem I've had going on 12 months now:

Sometimes it won't post; all the fans whir up (can hear the hard disks) then nothing. Other times, it posts and will boot into windows. When running windows, it will run perfectly, even under high loads.

When it booted last night:

Ran Prime95 for 3 hours, not a hitch. Cpu temps were normal

Memtest checked out ok

3D Mark 06 ran fine (4 times), expected/normal scores for the system (in comparison to online)

Hopping around in Crysis and CS:GO with everything turned up, max res/AA etc (20 to 30fps) for a total of 1.5 hours; not a hitch. No artifacts, temps/vcores reasonable according to CPU-Z/powerstrip etc

So the whole system under heavy/full load is just fine, even for long periods. WHEN it posts. If it doesn't post....well then it doesn't post :(

Swapped out the card (8800GTX) for an old HTPC card (Radeon HD4350 or some such): posts everytime, using it to type this now.

Had a quick check over the card; no loose capacitors, no cracks on the pcb, no visible dust (I clean my case out with compressed air cans (fairly) regularly), no anomalies etc.

So, it's an intermittent problem, that doesn't make any sense to me. I can:

Take off the fan/heatsink of the 8800GTX, clean very thoroughly with compressed air; even replace the old TIM with new if needed.

Or

"Bake" the card as per online instructions. I have a 4870X2 to "bake" (friends) as well....so it may be worth a shot.

Any thoughts? HELP!! :(

TDM SPAWN WEAPON (81 comments)
Posted by Something @ 10:39 CDT, 25 April 2011 - iMsg
A lot of players complain/hate the MG cess which is part of Q3/QL TDM. It's not quite as ridiculous today as it was in the xerp era, but it can still be a game decider. Take cpm4 for example...

What would you change the starting weapon to? A QW-esque shotgun, something akin to a Q2 blaster, or a completely new weapon altogether?

I think a projectile based weapon with a damage or around 30 to 35, with a comparable reload time to the RL (800ms?), where the projectile's velocity would be around 900 ups, and have a splash damage of about a third/half of the current RL would be nice to try out in a devpick.

What do you folks think?

Here is a photo of what I mean

Was just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems, seems like a pretty bad bug on id's new back end.

{HUD}: 3Wave Ammo positioning question (5 comments)
Posted by Something @ 13:15 CDT, 13 October 2010 - iMsg
I have a problem with the ammo icon on this hud I modified:

http://qlhud.core.ws/id/qhcytc

I have two ammo icons, one for the weapons with max ammo 25, and another for max ammo 150/200. The reason I have to do this is because the 3Wave digits are of fixed position, and are "right aligned" so to speak.

As such when you change from the rocket launcher to the lg, for example, the icon temporarily goes into the ammo value until the weapon switch has finished.

When using the normal textstlye, this is not a problem because it centers on one coordinate when going from double to triple digit values; see fox's hud.

Is there an "align left" command that anyone knows of?

Servers Shutting Down Mid Game :( (24 comments)
Posted by Something @ 07:27 CDT, 19 July 2009 - iMsg
I mainly play on the uk servers, and the past five games have all been ended mid game through random diconnections...and then when I refresh the server browser the server that I was playing on has been taken offline and is no longer there. It's happened a couple of times on some french servers as well.
Just wondering if this is a known problem/update quirk and if anyone else has been having the same problem.
