Cheater vs movie maker (33 comments)
Posted by eri @ 08:05 CDT, 27 September 2011 - iMsg
So i've been reading the recent cheating threads.

The one that stood out is the zeroql thread for obvious reasons.
Zeroql is an odd case, in the sense that he is both a cheater and a revered movie maker.

The main question is, should one be able to get praise for the second while having done the first?

I vote no. For reasons i will outline below

1) Quake live is dying, we all know it. The best way to get an influx of new people is to promote the game ourselves (since id obviously won't do it). One of the way to do that is by using fragmovies.

But the problem presents itself, people on Youtube or whatever see the latest zeroql movie (which is admittedly usually well made) and they go check out the game. One of the first things they'll end up on is this very site.

What they see here is a community divided between encouraging a known cheater to make his movies and crucifying said cheater.

Does that encourage a person to be part of said community? No.

2)Potential sponsorship. We all know it's needed for QL to survive in this era of 1 million Dota and lol tournaments.

But what will a potential sponsor think about a known cheater being accepted in the scene because he makes promotional movies?

Exactly zero, since if they would accept that fact they would instantly lose any legitimacy towards their target audience. Who wants to follow a game where the outcome is rigged.

There are other objections to this movie maker - cheater dilemma but i'll leave it at this for now

ctf euro draft (74 comments)

So watching the american ctf draft tourney kinda made me realise how much i used to love q3ctf

It will never be the same again but i suggest we try having a euro ctf draft as well , i'd like as many oldschool div1 people as possible but that"ll probably not happen so...

But if youre interested in the concept itself please leave a msg here,

q3 retrospect (11 comments)

I never thought i'd miss q3 as much as i do.

That said here are some favorite memories:

ctf: What so to say about you my sweet sweet love. Your flag has always tempted me from the very first day i saw you in a pickup game.

I miss Klem whining at a ping 10 defender, i miss Tuko crying because he didn't get both powerups , I miss the old IQS vs whatever top games followed by many . I especially miiss playing 4-5 attack with sheepheads and giving many top clans fits, ah the good old days.

tdm was great as well, watching ice climbers play yhe best q3 ever, watching toxic just go berserk on top class opposition. It was my privilege to be head admin for these kinda players

What do we have now, 4k vs i cant even remember that clanname Juvenile is in . It just lacks something in a certain way.

ql needs more tdm and ctf and it needs it fast , before i cant even remember the name of the top tdm clan.

State of the union : Quake Live (75 comments)
Posted by eri @ 11:44 CST, 28 December 2010 - iMsg
So another year has passed, filled wirh whine and displeasement virtually all around. Do we as ex or current Quake players really have nothing to be thankful for?

I'd say we do. In an era where fast paced fps games are a dying breed we still have no problems finding our daily fix.

Sure it is not completely how we would like it to be but hey, neither is the economy or virtually anything else these days. Does your girlfriend always put out on command ? I doubt it.

Quake live , despite all its flaws ; has united a truly dying race (namely the fast paced fps player). Never before have we seen q2 stars play alongside q3 players. I'm thankful for that.

I'm also thankful for having the opportunity to watch a new generation of players still enjoy our old somewhat broken game. Even us old q3 tarts who have been around the block 20 or more times can still find joy in a superb rocket - rail combo by newschool player x on a lvlup stream . GTV we don't have but i'm still in debt to stream organizations for providing me with hours of entertainment free of charge.

Quake truly is a unique game , it helped me through a difficult time in my life by making me feel i was worth a damn even if "i" was a virtual representation of myself. We should be very gratefull for all the hours of entertainment and sometimes even life help (through irc or other means) it has provided countless people.

I for one owe a lot to quake 3, i'm sure quake live will eventually mean the same to others.

A somewhat different demo compared to the usual div1 fair, as 10 or 11 caps total should show. The chase pov would be better but sadly i dont have that :)
