Travel

6am - Any event diary that begins with 6am sucks. With my coach for Coventry departing my local bus station at 7.55am I had to be up with time for the three S's, finish packing and enough time to catch a bus to the station. A nip on to IRC to see who else was awake (no one) and it was time to go.

I caught a break with a bus I wasn't expecting that showed up just as I was en route to the bus I planned to catch that was another ten minutes away. Though this did mean waiting over thirty minutes for the coach, it was a lot better than walking along the road with an airport travel case (the kind on wheels, that old people use for their shopping) on pavement.

7.55am - The coach arrives! I notice while waiting that no attractive girls are awake at this time (or take the bus), only old people. Lots of old people. A massive total of three people including myself get on the caoch from this stop, which is good as there is no leg room unless you spread out over two seats.

Around 10.30am - We arrive in Oxford, a Uni town + sunny day makes for some sight seeing ^_^. We move off picking up what I assume were students heading home for the weekend. Until we reach Coventry absolutely nothing interesting happens, I went through a couple of chicken sandwiches, some Tropicana and make a good start on Tom Clancy - The Cardinal of the Kremlin

12.40pm - Coventry! As a southerner I was expecting it to look a lot different, mostly a lot more industrial looking. I call Ste to pick me up, two further phone calls later and 50 minutes, he arrives! For some reason France winz and France Appleseed held him up. We head off to their hotel (growl, you'll find out why soon) and they book their room with an ATM style machine. Next up is a visit to B&Q for some super long power cables, then off to the event.

Event

Finally I get to the event, after something like 7 hours, first people I see are TosspoT and ReDeYe, I declare hunger, TosspoT concurs and we head off down the road to the nearest pub for some eating. They have a combo chicken, mushroom, onion ring and garlic bread each, I go for just chicken. Paul and Stu reminisce over the times they've shared together, we talk about the event, whats happening in gaming at the moment, Warsow comes up quite a few times ;). ReDeYe declares he can't finish a shandy he had all of two sips of, so we go back to the event.

I setup my laptop, which I later give up for the Reason-Gaming shuttle and ASUS TFT that I'm using now, which most importantly can, unlike my laptop, play Warsow!

Over the course of the afternoon more people arrive, I see Q50, ddk, r2k, storm, zkyp, PURRI, ooze, fooKi, deus, raoul, Akiles, Logan, dozo, Ser etc..

Sometime later ESRealtiy megapersonality tom says hi finally, stupidly he invites me and TosspoT to a BBQ at storm's and we discuss sharing a hotel as LAN floor is teh suck. Bad move.

Althrough storm lives ten minutes away, he does not know the area, in fact he's a hinderence in helping us find his home. Before we even leave though, it turns out that a Ford Fiesta doesn't fit 6 people. For a while we discuss the idea of someone (me) travelling in the boot or someone (ddk) laying over three of us in the back. After much deliberation we settle on taking two trips, dropping me and storm off the first time going back for zkyp and ddk.

However, we need firelighters and veggie burgers, requiring a stop at Sainsburys. Don't mention Sainburys to tom, follow storm's directions (to his own house) we circle the supermarket three times before escaping its clutches.

Well over thirty minutes since leaving the event (and ddk & zkyp), we make it to storm's house. tom and TosspoT head off back to the LAN, entrusting the navigation to Toss who ReD claims has got them lost in several countries. Amazingly they manage to get back safely and the BBQ starts.

I'll skip to the end of the night now, I mentioned earlier we agreed on staying in a hotel, the same one that winz and Appleseed checked in to earlier in the day. We transport ddk/zkyp's PCs to the event, I consult someone for diretions to the hotel who even draws a handy map. Go right out of the event, then left, drive down a long road, past two roundabouts, go right on the A45, left at the first junction and from there its easy.

It wasn't. We managed to complete the first direction (go right out of the event), the first left tom was skeptical about (with industrial park on the sign), so we continue on. And on. And on. We dont' turn left until the road ends and we hit a join to another road going perpendicular. At this point I'm sure we had actually left Coventry.

Knowing the second direction we were given was to go left, we went left. After this we lost track of where we were, even though we left at 00:30 and knew the hotel closed at 1am, we continued searching for the hotel for almost an hour

Until storm called and offered us space at his house, so we changed direction again!

So we get to storm's, he ,his sister and his friend Ady are still up drinking (we had left about 3hrs ago), we're only interested in sleep after our driving misadventures. We bed down and try to get some sleep, but what are drunk people best at, interupting sleep. The dignitas video from the event, will give you an idea of what we went through. Then finally, we slept.

Day 1
Day began waking up at the absurd time of 8am, do the usual get up routine, have breakfast and a quick surf online. Finished packing my stuff, camera, batteries, pillow etc... Left home at around 10.20 to catch my bus to Fareham station. Wait around for a while for the National Express coach to come, for a good 10 minutes had a couple of old women talking like a couple of women do. The two or so hours on the coach breezed by while I started reading a book (Hostile Conflict by Gorden Kent). Got to Heathrow then began the search for my next bus to Harrow, not as hard as I was worrying about, waited around a while and it came. Took an age and eventually got to Harrow. Had a rough mental image of the map Sujoy posted and went in the general direction, after some distance spotted the hotel which I knew was very close then I found the Harrowlife front and entered.

Guy at the front desk asks, "Are you here for Quake 4", "Yup", "Go upstairs", went up and spotted Jay, said hi, then Zacc, chilled out for a while. Sujoy soon turned up, said hi, met Ms.X. Sujoy gave Jay some money he owed and we went on a mission to Subway (mmm), we have very similar Subway taste: Chicken Breast (he remembered to add bacon), cheese 'n' herb, toasted, no veg.

While the players practice I watched on, soon Red showed, met the rest of g0d, 215, Toss, time flew by pretty quickly. Had a couple of games vs Zacc where he whopped me, a game vs Trito where she whooped me too, time pretty much flew by. Helped move some stuff for iTG including the bigass plasma, originally propped up on a very shaky table on a desk, I was in constant fear of tipping it. Reconfigured the servers so that auto demo and screenshot was on (don't trust players). Later on Sujoy brought up a 24pack of krone (as you can see in gallery, Ms.X was quite fond of :), soon enough it was 2am and we broke up for the night (or morning).

Day 2
Woke up around 8.30 I think, maybe 9.30, wondered where I was, ah, Sujoy's house. Shave, shower, breakfast then back to the LAN for around 11 (I think :\).

Most people were there by the time we got there, even saw Jam for a brief moment. Aphextwin was around, nice of him to drop by after spending Friday night in his hotel room ordering room service :p. Met the remainder of the players, including dozo who finally got his spot at the tourney, and the Reason Gaming manager rg.

Tourney started on time just after 2pm, from then on it was a pretty busy time getting map choices, scores and updating the site. After the first groupstage we then uploaded all the winner POVs to the site, then back to matches for another few hours until about 9pm. What was originally going to be about 5 or 6 of us going to Ask (italian restaurant) turned into the full group of 25. From the look of it the restaurant was really busy when we got there, then they got to work on making space for us, even moving other people. While this isn't the largest gaming dinner I've been to (i26 had over 30 of us) it was a fair sight of 25 of us. After much indecision of choosing between some pasta dish that astz kept saying was great the night before, a spag bol and pizza, I Went for a pepperoni pizza. While the waitress handed out drinks, I ended up with far more beer on me than I'd of liked, I blame Toss. Feh.

After the dinner we went to some bar, three biggest memories of this outing were; a) they took forever to serve, b) Jabb0r (underage) haxxored his way in using TooGoood's NHS card and c) Daishi (I mean Andrew of course) was there. The chrome hats proved very popular with the locals, Dai..Andrew chased his fair share of them, to take them back, spoil sport! Sometime after 2am we were forced out and made our way back to the hotel with promises of beer from g0d. This was where the fun really started with astz eventually being totally drunk. You'll see photos of astz, HELL and deus getting very close and rowdy but what you'll hear most about is astz going to his room, ending up in the hotel kitchen and coming back with an orange, some pancakes and a bowl of fruit. Eventually he was tucked in bed by Aphextwin where later he woke up with "I love hell" and "I love r2k" written across his body (see pics from MsX).

Day 3
Woke up around 9.30 again, instantly realised I hadn't brought my bag (with camera and more importantly then, my ticket home) back with me. As I put my dirty washing away I caught a whiff which really wasn't good. Got to that LAN around 1030, expecting everyone to be there, just Toss unfortunately! Jay turned out to be a good boy and turned up well in time for his match; Zacc, Deus and GaRpY (who didn't even drink!) didn't. While going down for a Subway for breakfast at sometime after 12 I found Deus and GaRpY (again, he didn't drink!). Eventually matches started and went smoothly. While Zacc has a cooller-esque habit of typing his comments ("USE ANOTHER GUN!"), Jay and deus are very vocal with their midgame comments. The finals came and went, people began leaving and cu@onlines were said.

Huge thanks to Sujoy for hosting a great event and letting me help out, VIA for making it possible, Tim for being VIA, alot of fun and somehow being thoughtful enough to pickup my bag on Saturday, g0d for being there, spreading the chrome goodness and last of all Red for giving me a lift home!

I hope this LAN is a sign of things to come for the UK especially, we have a really strong chance of leaving our mark this year in Quake 4, and apart from that being able to hold a decent event that everyone came out of wanting another. </soppy stuff>

With Q4 release coming up I'm looking to upgrade my system, currently a 2800barton(2ghz), 9600xt and 1gig of DDR400..

Apart from these listed below, what other good places are there to get hardware (mobo, processor, graphics) in the UK?

Posted by therogue @ 08:07 CDT, 11 July 2005 - iMsg
La la la, same routine as the other days.

Got the event all ready for the 2v2 tdm th0r was arranging to keep the players busy on their 2nd day of bugger all to do. When we got there, no other ut2004ers were around! th0r wasn't impressed as he had got up especially for them, nevermind. Spent a while around iTG area talking to red, went to press area to see how pk/cs was going at dallas, female cs final was played and they were interviewed on the press stage.

The 2v2 eventually started, watched some Q3 matches from various places, czm/fox I watched from a little bit from the side of czm so I could see whatever the PoV was on the plasma and also czm's screen, was good =].

Eagerly watched fnatic.cs beat U5 on IRC with various other fnatic staff around (sizah, rail, snake, dvo, black2lip I think too). Think I prefer ircbots to watching CS live/hltv :\ Had a fnatic meal with I think everyone fnatic at the event except toxic.

Killed time until the Q3 final, czm vs Cooller (was moved to 9.30pm with no announcement at all ¬_¬). They took ages setting up, after 20 or so minutes they then announced they were going to do an allstar TDM with czm/cooller as coach. Was good but I think alot just wanted to watch the final, for a late start the stage was more or less full which was good to see, even though his team lost Cooller "had reason to smile" :)). The actual final eventually was played, a comfortable hub for czm after a bad start, dm6 could of gone better for czm, cooller was quite campy sometimes (catwalk stairs, shards) he would sit/crawl around for some time before moving off again. Third map (dm13? quake isn't my game :) ) felt unlucky as there were numerous frag+suicides (at least 5), czm just couldn't seem to take cooller down heavy alot of the time even with good opportunity (don't take my comments too strongly, quake isn't my game =p).

Watched the postmatch ceremony, interview, medals and cheques then headed to hotel for the last time.

Most memorable moments were Cooller answering his phone twice on stage :)) and also talking to someone from Blizzard who stopped by to see ut/q3, dunno who he was but he said he'd played with CombatCarl in the past.

That was my last day at ESWC, the next morning I decided to head straight for CDG. With hindsight I could of gone for at least another 1hr or so in the morning as I had tons of time at cdg doing nothing.

To summarise;

The Good-
Players, people, staff, etc
PCs
Food (6+ restaurants upstairs from the event)
Layout, ut2004+q3+itg were right next to each other, very handy

The Bad-
wlan was press room only, securing it with a key that changed every 24hrs available on the press site or at least putting it on mainstage and/or itg area would of been great
Timing of ut2004, played way too fast, and only 1 stage match
If they had been more efficient with the use of the main stage they could of ran alot more matches and at various times for different games so they all get a fair share
Announcements, or lack of, if there was a PA system I didn't notice it, main stage schedule was on site for ages but still an announcemnt letting people know 30mins before a match was due would of got more people at some matches, also the Q3 final was moved (although by the time it started it didn't matter) without any warning

Exhausted everything I can remember on first try, these entries are not meant to be especially coherent/good english/interesting etc. Any factual inaccuracies please point out, my memory isn't good on the best of days, remembering what happened for several full days having made no record is bound to have mistakes!

Thanks for reading (if you did, otherwise *shrug*), hi/bye to everyone who was there and I met, wish I'd of come in yesterday to at least say bye/etc

/the end

Same routine as day before, only felt a helluva lot better having had food+drink+sleep. More drinks + a pack of BN from the shop and off to the event. Made it well in time for the UT2004 final (11am on day3, wtf honestly?).

Next to the complete rush that the UT2004 competition was (all except 1 match played in the first 2 days), the time of the UT2004 final was so early less than half of the actual players were there to watch it, and the stage area was relatively empty compared to how much seating there was (did spot les seules watching).

Final itself went pretty well, started soon after 11, no hiccups etc. The use of CPMut (or whatever it's name is, I always forget) was a welcome surprise. Only annoyances were seeing the scores and health because the actual stage coveraged part of the screen. Someone (eg lotus/wormbo/cruicky/whoever does cpmut) should make a mut which allows some customisation of the hud so things like health/score/time/weapons etc can be moved/changed the look of at least for spectators (maybe even players).

Match was OK/good, Rankin looked very easy for winz, Ironic could of gone either way at the last moment. Falcon managed to get to 7:5 from several frags down in the last couple of minutes, with just ~10seconds to go he got winz again, went to check the 50a spawn (where you tend to spawn most of the time) hoping for the respawn kill.. but winz had spawned elsewhere and we knew it was over. Shame as a 3 mapper would of been more fitting for a final.

After the match there was the medals and cheques ceremony on stage and then they moved to press stage for interview etc... Afterwards there wasn't much going on, did some coverage work. Later on there was a big lunch/dinner with all bar rmzs (who we later found out had left for home!) from UT2004 there (if I remember correctly anyway) which was pretty cool.

Sometime on this day was (the what will probably be famous) Lauke stealing pads from the aAa stand, with permission of Sunscorcher as a test of the staff, and filmed by zulg. Video will probably come out sometime, basically they gave lauke a hoodie and he went back and forth and around the aAa stand (they had a medium sized area for a shop + shootout pcs on a little raised area) taking mousepads. Was really funny, when finally 1 of the staff realised (could see him reacting/panicing, wondering wtf to do), he called over the others to one side while lauke was at the other taking another. The staff started asking a group of young visitors if they knew what was happening, their reaction was "not me!" while jumping back with arms in the air surrendering (heh, french). Finally Lauke couldn't take it anymore and walked over returning the pads ending it.

Remainder of the day was spent hanging around, watching q3 matches, talking, some fun playing etc. With nothing else going on Lotus was eager to get out of the event, with what started out as about 14 or more people dwindled to 6 (me, astz, hypno, killu, donnie, lotus) and we headed off to one of their hotels. Went to the supermarket outside their hotel to get beer and went to lotus's room. Lotus disappeared for a while (we thought to the toilet), he'd gone to killu/donnie's, we moved over there. Got McDs, watched "the land before time" in German comparing the characters (dinosaurs) to players, ended with playing/teaching poker with skittles (I won). Lauke/cooller and co crashed in drunk at the end. I decided to head for my hotel as it was getting late and I cba with taxis, rather stick to metro.

Spent 30mins lost as fuck in the area around their hotel trying to find the metro station, would like to thank DevilMC especially for being the most clear (even though his english wasn't great) with instructions and I found the station. Made it back to the hotel, DvO had managed to get wireless on my laptop working and was doing ESR stuff. Sleep.

Got up, shit, shower, shave etc and got ready for the first full day. At breakfast I had the best part of a dozen glasses of orange juice as I was so thirsty. Left and went to the local newsagent/grocer to get more drinks then made our journey by metro to ESWC.

Me and ODEE left DvO to get his pass and we went over to ut2004 area/itg to find out what was happening that day, basically UT2004 groupstage 2 up to and including semi finals.

Can't remember much specific about this day, just greeting most ut2004 players and other interesting personalities, watching the matches, talking to people etc.. Saw jibo/fox on the main stage, experienced real food for the first time since touching down, chicken brochettes and chips. That that was the day I first went into the press room, updated fnatic+esr, met sizah and railmccoy and we got our fnatic shirts. With astz and hypno out ODEE disappeared later in the day and had made it back home.

Most memorable event of the day was the 1:0 in overtime lauke/falcon on ironic, the most stereotypical score there could be.

Can't remember anything else, at the end would of headed back to hotel for sleep (actual sleep this time!)
