pimp your firefox (28 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 06:52 CST, 26 February 2015 - iMsg
So, I've recently gone back to linux, this time a Fedora instead of arch.

First thing I've noticed is, of course, youtube not working due to no flash and being forced to use the crappy html5 container in firefox or install chrome if I want to watch videos.

So, for a few days I've used the html5 player and it's horrible. or beyond horrible, can't decide yet..

Long story short, finally set up my firefox more or less how I want to, so here's my config.

The extension I'm using is Open With (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-with/). I'm using this not only for youtube, but for anything with a video running in a flash container. Basically, go about:openwith once you install it and add

/usr/bin/mpv --force-window --ytdl

To make this work you will obviously need mpv and youtube-dl on your system. Set the options to display as menu item on view menu, main context menu and main context menu (links). You can now right-click youtube, twitch, etc links and open them directly in mpv. You can also browse to a twitch channel or youtube page or whatever ytdl supports and just click the mpv icon and it'll load the video.

Now on to embedding mpv instead of flash/html5 container. To do this I needed to install mozplugger and modify it a bit to use mpv instead of mplayer which is the default. think this is the only thing that needs to be changed:

/etc/mozpluggerrc
define(MP_CMD,[mpv -really-quiet $1 </dev/null])
define(MP_EMBED,[embed noisy ignore_errors: MP_CMD(--autofit=$width -wid $window $1)])
define(MP_NOEMBED,[noembed noisy ignore_errors maxaspect swallow(mpv): MP_CMD($1)])

Since I was editing mozpluggerrc I stumbled upon openoffice part and made it work with libre:

define([OO],[swallow(VCLSalFrame) fill: libreoffice --nologo --norestore --view $1 "$file"])

Next thing you need to embed your player of choice in firefox is to grab ViewTube (http://isebaro.com/viewtube/?ln=en). Note that you'll need greasemonkey for that. While viewtube is great it unfortunately doesn't support videos embeded on external sites, like ESR for example. That left me a bit disappointed, but I kept looking and seems the same author made the LinkTube extension which replaces all the embeded content on external sites with a link to the video. Unfortunately it makes for an ugly link, so I had to "trim" that script a bit. Here's the trimmed script which only displays the link and no other crap: http://pastie.org/9984555

This is where openwith extension comes in handy again, you can just right-click it and open in mpv and continue to browse with no hassle.

Anyway, hope you find it useful.

Aerowalk QuadDamage (Week 4 Final) (20 comments)
Posted by Jehar @ 18:33 CST, 25 February 2015 - iMsg
Scheduled: 13:00 CST, 28 February 2015 to 16:00 CST, 28 February 2015
Begins In:

The (in)famous Quad Damage tournament is back! Uniting Quake players from every title, the Quad Damage will span four games across four weeks: QuakeWorld, Quake II, Quake Live, and Quake IV. To keep the focus on game differences rather than map knowledge, we'll be showcasing the tried and true Aerowalk in each game. Playing in any week will net you points - playing in multiple games will net you bonus points!

This is the final week, finally! Work and illness have delayed things for almost a month, but we want to finish this cup off with a bang. This has been largely experimental, but unquestionably fun. After this week, there will be some notes and tweaks, and we'll churn out another... likely sans Q4. I'm sure it will be missed.

However there are rules up for: QUAKECON® 2015 QUAKE LIVE® TRI-MASTER TOURNAMENT

The Quake Live Tri-Master Tournament will feature competitions for up to sixteen (16) four-player teams, where each team will be put to the test in a triathlon comprised of Capture the Flag (CTF) , Team Deathmatch (TDM), and Duel to determine which team can stake their claim to being the one true TriMaster Champion. Teams who come out on top will share prizes of $32,000. Following the Triathlon Tournament, the top two individual duelers selected by their team will then face off to claim an additional $8,000 and the title of Grand Master Champion.

Update: The Quake Live Tri-Master Tournament has now been announced on QuakeCon.org.

Tournament Idea for duel (16 comments)
Posted by aeoL @ 03:33 CST, 24 February 2015 - iMsg
I've had this idea for a while now but how about a duel cup where no one knows who they're playing. Basically everyone gets given an alias to play on the day and only the admins know who's who. Duelers have to adapt and spectators have to figure out who's who and earn prizes for correct guesses etc.

I reckon it would be a fun idea to try at least once.

Abyssus 2014 & G100s RAPID REVIEW (4 comments)
Posted by ratman1337 @ 20:02 CST, 23 February 2015 - iMsg
So having small hands and coming from a WMO I was looking for a replacement. So I tried these two out and here are the results.

Abyssus:

Cons:
Shape isn't for everyone. It's very palmable and almost a combination between an ergonomic and ambidextrous mouse. Razer seem to go for aesthetic designs that can be negative to the mouse.

Clicking in middle mouse button takes a little to much force and causes a lot of vibration within the mouse.

Pros:
Perfect glide and feet
Cord is light and flexible
Perfect weight for it's size
Weight distribution is decent
Sensor feels better than the G100s
Switches are a treat to use
Feels really sturdy
Looks nice

The side grips are decent compared the old deathadders glossy ones were if you are sweating it's like trying to hold a lubed up dildo.

G100S:

Pros:
Shape +1 (most claw users would love this)
Sensor

Cons:
Build quality (feels almost hollow)
Switches feel terrible compared the abyssus
Cable was annoying because it was stiff
Weight distribution was horrible
Feet don't glide well at all
Looks bad

Overall the G100s really does feel like a budget mouse with excellent shape and decent sensor. If only there was premium edition of the G100s that improved on the quality of the mouse.

The Razer Abyssus is really a treat to use that is if you can deal with the unusual shape that are present in most Razer mice.

my friends are mean (33 comments)

Story One

So, I got this problem. My friends always tell me I'm a hipster. At first I was like 'lol u guys funny', but now it's going on for quite some time (read: months) and it's starting to annoy me. Real friends shouldn't say mean things to each other, right? Is it time for me to break off some friendships or should I stick to that old saying, keep your friends close and enemies even closer? I normally wouldn't care about these "trolls", but I recently lost a lot of weight and even though I got a confidence boost, I still don't feel comfortable (comparison pic).

What's worse, people that pass me by on the street sometimes give me that disgusted look so now I'm starting to feel insecure. Maybe it really is my clothes and looks? Anyway, I will provide some pictures so you can form a good opinion and tell me what you really think.

Here's what I think. I like to dress nice, I like to take care of my looks, does that really make me a hipster? Do people that mock me deserve to be called my friends? Should I give them another chance and pass off their trolling for what it is or break off all contact?

As promised, below are some pics so you can make a good comment.

same Sensitivity all games or different? (6 comments)
Posted by StillBlaze @ 10:19 CST, 20 February 2015 - iMsg
Wondering how many people use different sensitivities for different games or do you just try to make it as the same as possible?

Have been slacking with Quake in 2015 mainly cause when i get on at 6am theres barely any games i can get into straight away ((

But anyway ive been playing CSGO a while on 40cm/360 and now when i try to go back to Quake with 26cm-30cm/360 i simply can not play, other then the mouse feeling super fast i just cant adapt like i used to.

With my cramped setup and speed of Quake i can barely do 90 degree turns with 40cm/360 let alone a 180 and if i wanted to play some PQL it would be far worse then classic.

I have a large mouse pad but use it vertical instead of the standard horizontal.

More of a sad thread then answers but say what you will and know on your experiences.

Advice for QL config scripting please :) (20 comments)
Posted by storm @ 04:39 CST, 20 February 2015 - iMsg
Hiya,

I'm having some trouble scripting a zoom bind in my config to work properly. Basically it does work, but if I get fragged it thinks what ever weapon I pick up is in the railgun zoom mode (if I was fragged with railgun out) which gets me fragged when I'm constantly zooming with rockets. Hope that makes sense, basically the zoom script means if I press my railgun bind twice it zooms in / out.

Here is my bind cfg:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
seta weapon_1 "weapon 1; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_1" // gnt
seta weapon_2 "weapon 2; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_2" // mg
seta weapon_3 "weapon 3; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_1" // ssg
seta weapon_4 "weapon 4; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_1" // gl
seta weapon_5 "weapon 5; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_1" // rl
seta weapon_6 "weapon 6; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_3" // lg
seta weapon_7 "weapon 7; vstr rg_1; vstr ch_2" // rg
seta weapon_8 "weapon 8; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_1" // pls
seta weapon_14 "weapon 14; vstr rg_o; vstr ch_2" // hmg

seta ch_1 "cg_crosshairsize 24; cg_drawCrosshair 3; cg_crosshairColor 4"
seta ch_2 "cg_crosshairsize 24; cg_drawCrosshair 6; cg_crosshairColor 4"
seta ch_3 "cg_crosshairsize 24; cg_drawCrosshair 2; cg_crosshairColor 4"

seta rg_o "-zoom; bind r vstr weapon_7" // This binds my rail key to change weapon to rail, and is executed on each weapon (see below)
seta rg_1 "-zoom; bind r vstr rg_0" // This is executed once you've chose rail, and binds rail key to Zoom
seta rg_0 "+zoom; bind r vstr rg_1" // This is the zoom, and also binds my rail key to zoomout

// -- WEAPONS -- //
bind a "vstr weapon_1"
bind z "vstr weapon_2"
bind v "vstr weapon_3"
bind b "vstr weapon_4"
bind w "vstr weapon_5"
bind g "vstr weapon_6"
bind r "vstr weapon_7"
bind TAB "vstr weapon_8"
bind c "vstr weapon_14"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I heard there is a new system which is superior to 'vstrs' in QL but I don't understand them yet, I think they were called aliases? If anyone can help me out it'd be awesome. Thanks guyz.

btw ch_1/2/3 are crosshair vstr's, rg_1/1/0 are for the railgun zoom script.

LCD MONITOR 160 Hz and more? (27 comments)
Posted by JiyhuaWei @ 07:38 CST, 19 February 2015 - iMsg
So i was ready some hardware news as i do everyday i have half a dozen of hardware websites that i visit daily out of boredom (they are all pretending to be real journalism but it's all publicity by the way, same for video game review websites). So yeah i was wandering around bored as fuck of the non evolution of the hardware and then i spoted this : http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/acer-xg270hu...esync.html

So the monitor is 2560x1440p and is runing at 144Hz. And there is a bunch others coming : http://lmgtfy.com/?q=2560x1440+144+Hz

They are all using DVI-D which means our 1920x1080p 144Hz monitors we already have could already run higher, like 160 or 170Hz? Maybe much more? 200+Hz? What are the limits? i remember on CRT we could calculate the max refresh the monitor could output.

I found a few uninterresting stuff googling with the keywords : 1080 170hz. One was reaching 170Hz with nvinspector software.

I have a BenQ XL2411T so i figured i could go higher than 144Hz maybe with some nerds helping out.

Wmo problem and replacement (28 comments)
Posted by nub_ @ 02:34 CST, 19 February 2015 - iMsg
I've been using wmo for years but since moving to new hardware I can't get it to work on 500hz (win7 x64). I've tried following the steps from ngohq, esreality, various YouTube videos, forums etc. and nothing works. I either end up with same 125hz or I end up with dead mouse that I get working again through device manager.
After digging a bit of info on my problem I found that it could be mobo related (asrock z97 extreme4), and that the way to solve it could be disabling USB 3.0, although mouse was and will be plugged in 2.0 port. I can't disable it since I need 3.0 ports.

Anyway, I'm thinking of buying a new mouse.

I would like to have:
- similar shape to wmo
- softwareless 500hz and 400 or 800 dpi (I don't like that junk that comes with a lot of mice, or at least I would like to keep that at minimum)

Any recommendations?

PC issue every mouse I use is imprecise? (53 comments)
Posted by lukeyslife @ 12:49 CST, 18 February 2015 - iMsg
Hi everyone,

So for around 2 years now I have had a problem with every mouse I have used on this PC, whether it be gaming grade or not. It affects every application used, not just games even the desktop and programs outside of an OS like startup repair.
OS's used: Windows 7, 8.1, Ubuntu.

The issue seems to be with general tracking, as I play games especially FP shooters aiming is a big part of the genre so I am put at a big disadvantage with my potential cut.

The issue is that the mice I use especially in-game feels similar to deceleration, for example if I were to move 90 degrees left or right I could make the movement but the mouse would feel slightly slower to make the movement; this isn't mouse lag as the input isn't delayed however the movement feels slightly behind.

The issue isn't down to mice I have used 6 different gaming mice, they all feel the same so please don't answer with it's down to DPI etc.

I have already negated some components being the cause as I have either swapped them out one time or more and have rigorously tested them in different scenarios.

Components negated: PSU, CPU, MOTHERBOARD, MICE,

It is either to do with conflicting hardware, or some settings maybe in the registry / bios.
I'm basing it on my GPU or possibly monitor as they seem most likely for any kind of delay which could have an affect on how the mouse feels.

is there are solutions anyone could give, I appreciate any support.

AMD A10 APU + QL = rock solid 250FPS? (19 comments)
Posted by noacc @ 12:10 CST, 18 February 2015 - iMsg
question number one - will AMD A10 X4 6800K run QL at rock solid 250FPS (no bloom, vertexlights =1, no marks, r_picmip 5, 1080p)?
question number two - does AMD A10 X4 6800K support 144Hz with BenQ monitors?

I guess both answers are yes, but it still not 100% clear, anyone with similar setup here?

alternatively, will Intel Core i3-4130 with HD4400 do the job?

EDIT: mobo will support Dual-Link DVI but will the integrated HD8670D allow me to set 1080p@144Hz? It can do 1440p@60Hz so the bandwidth is not an issue, my main concern is being familiar with AMD buggy software, I am not sure they are supporting this specific resolution and refresh rate I need...

It reminds me a very great deal of Quake 2 instagib with the maps where you're tiny and running around a kitchen or something, but every map is like that.

Anybody else tried this game? It's a lot of fun, and coming from Quake you get a huge advantage right off the bat.

Cloth pads like Mantis Control? (6 comments)
Posted by acid_reptile @ 06:58 CST, 18 February 2015 - iMsg
So i recently switched to cloth pads, after like 10 years of using hardpads. Still had this hardly ever used razer mantis control laying around. I bought it back in the days when i was playing with laser mice (G3,G9)

I tried it a few days ago and i really like it for my opticals (G1,mx300&Aurora)

Long story short, i ordered a goliathus control and was pretty sure they send me the speed edition. Then i checked the pictures on the razer zone page and was like wtf. It's actually the control edition. There's like 10 times more friction on the mantis control. They don't compare in the slightest. I don't see why so many people recommend this pad. (unless they like low friction and play very low sens) Is the speed edition even faster? or is it the other way around with the names? (if i remember right this wouldn't be the first time)

Any recommendations?

Hi guys. I need some good eyes to judge the video quality of two demos.

I've rendered two demos 6 times each, with each video having a slightly different encoder quality. For each test, can you tell the difference and which video is the best and worst? Please check them out in 1080p since that requires the highest bitrate.

Test 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV2wlwfXvd8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2Hqq90c8Rk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM8SOCVZB-I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkGjZz-oBZw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbE9Cu1mVU0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu69gJESMjg

Test 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsT9yaFPBBM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5obw-nCPxk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAEeXudIQ08
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF_T9xm3CP0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74XTSGFeFbo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBiyl23UkOg

I basically want to adjust the quality of igmdb.org encoder output. Right now it creates gigantic 30+Mbit/sec mp4s which result in huge downloads (2GB for a 10 minute render). After going through YouTube the quality gets reduced anyway so a high quality video output doesn't really mean much. I'm trying to see if reducing the encoder quality is even noticeable.

Thank you.

To use it, you need to
- run extraQL.exe locally on your machine (not just hook.js)
- go to "Userscripts / Userscript Management" and enable the "Demo Browser" script

From the "Play" menu you can now choose "Browse Demos".
(You might have to /web_reload if you just enabled the script)

The Demo Browser itself looks like this:

There have been various attempts over the years to "improve" the Doom palette. #CTFPICKUP JOURNEYS | NEW SERIES | EP. 1 (19 comments)
Posted by Mastermind-QL @ 08:52 CST, 14 February 2015 - iMsg
We have been playing pickup a long time (counting the beloved q3-times). All of the awesome plays and frags during the years usually end up in a fragmovie. Lately, there’s been very little creative activity in our beloved pickup-channel. Instead of a fragmovie, I thought creating a miniseries would be a better idea.

EPISODE 1:
Will re-upload episode 1 soon.

I have had very limited resources creating this, so be thankful. This first episode is really just an experiment and getting to know wolfcam.

Send your frags/caps/fails/other fun moment with timestamps to ethicalquake@hotmail.com to be in the next episode(s). Send whenever you have something cool.
Requirements:
- Games should be from pickups in #ctfpickup
- If you do have extraordinary material from public CTF or #tdmpickup, then its awkay, send it. :-)
- If you like this concept, then please do send your demos. For creating more episodes, I need more demos. Pickups are being played every day, and I should have enough material if you guys aren’t lazy. And yeah, quadruns are generally boring.

A comment:

I hope this idea can increase the pickup community and love for CTF in general. This is an invitation for all the public players who could consider taking part in organized games and getting a better sense of CTF. I would also like to encourage all the oldschoolers who dwell on public servers to start playing pickups again. Why?

‘CTF is dead’ is constantly brought up and mentioned. The truth is that CTF is alive. However, I think the activity level in the pickup-scene has a strong influence on the general perception of CTF’s status. If there were more players in the pickup community there would be higher motivation for organizing drafts etc. So, what I am saying is that all of you CTFers should change the perception of CTF being dead by joining and playing pickups. While I agree that public can be fun at times, I think every CTFer should consider pickups for 1) fun obviously! 2) better games 3) increase your understanding and skill in more challenging games.

As of right now, pickups are quite active and regular. However, there are the same veteran players adding. If it continues like this, it will die out sooner or later. We know #ctfpickup has a bad(ass) reputation. However, at the end of the day, it’s just a game and taking things seriously is a mistake in my opinion. The more experienced of you understand that there is a lot of psychological warfare in quake, and some comments are just to spread terror in the opponent’s heart (they don’t really mean anything). However, since many people do feel hurt for certain comments, I encourage the few pickup players who have tendencies for mean comments and trolling, to be nicer to new players. Accepting loss instead of pointing fingers after games should be a new mindset. Blame the bot. (Or Q50). Majority of pickup-players are nice at all times.

Are rocket jump scripts allowed? (86 comments)
Posted by draxus99 @ 17:06 CST, 13 February 2015 - iMsg
I was just messing around and came up with a basic rocket jump script... Basically it snaps your aim to the floor, jumps, fires, then snaps your aim back up to center... Pretty sure it gives a max height rocket jump or at least very close...

Anyway I'm just wondering if RJ scripts like this one are allowed in online play and/or in official matches?

(I'll post the actual script if there's interest)

question about r_displayrefresh? (15 comments)
Posted by vanqu1sh @ 05:51 CST, 13 February 2015 - iMsg
Is there a difference between setting it to the specific value your monitor is running at instead of "auto" ?

Only asking because I read through a bunch of players' configs and pretty much all of them had a specified refresh rate as opposed to "auto". Just wondering if it makes a difference at all, thx.

Casters opinions wanted (2D viewer) (16 comments)
Posted by myT @ 22:52 CST, 12 February 2015 - iMsg
Dear Quake 3 and Quake Live casters,

I'm creating this thread to gather your opinions on a few specific points.

First, if you've never heard of the old 2D viewer project, please take a look at this ESR thread: http://www.esreality.com/post/2297844/2ddemoviewer01released/

Here are my questions for you:
1. If you had a 2D demo viewer that would play back dm_90 demos "live" (with some latency, more on that later), would you be interested in using it? Would you want to use it for yourselves (say on a screen whose content isn't captured in your stream) so you can better inform your viewers with talk or would you want to show the viz. to your viewers?
2. What kind of latency do you think is tolerable for viz. and/or general info (text messages)?
3. Assuming you would want to display the viz. as a small quad somewhere on top of the first-person view in your stream, would you be able to set up your stream so that the audio/video of Quake/commentary are delayed by a fixed amount of time and thus the result well sync'd (i.e. first-person and 2D view are in sync)?

Here are some latency measurements I just did for maximum latency. Of course, depending on what happens in game and where you stand, results will change. I made several measurements for each case and share the ranges I obtained, but what we're really interested in is the worst case scenario.

So it seems that with a delay manually set to 2.5-3s for TDM and CTF games, we should be able to play back demos robustly.

I also thought of some other things that might help the caster make sense of what is happening in TDM/CTF:
- text displaying who has quad/regen/bs right now
- text displaying who has which flag
- text displaying which player took the last RA/quad/regen/bs
- text displaying which player killed the last quad/bs runner

I also think that for the offline mode, being able to jump at any time in the demo and having the option to generate for e.g. a heat map would be most useful for post-match analysis.

Please note that I haven't (re-)started the project yet.

Your thoughts?

Bypassing CRT refresh rate cap? (8 comments)
Posted by pierow @ 19:46 CST, 12 February 2015 - iMsg
Does anyone know of any way or have any experience with bypassing the limiters some CRTs have for refresh rate? I have a lacie electron blue 22 iv that is specced to have a 140khz horizontal scan rate, but the best refresh rate it allows is 160hz at 768 vertical lines and below (134.5khz). To my knowledge, given the specs it could do 200+hz at 800x600. If I try to set it higher than 160hz the CRT gives me an out of range message.

I imagine getting around this would require flashing the firmware, which is probably outside of my abilities. I have seen tools for writing to the EDID though and was wondering if anyone knew if changing that would affect the limiter. I'm also left wondering if there is a reason why low resolutions were limited on this monitor when other diamondtrons like the iiyamas allowed 200+hz.

The fall of camera man (3 comments)
Posted by donka @ 10:20 CST, 12 February 2015 - iMsg
Those who can attribute themselves to the oldfag days can recall that a cameraman on GTV could make or break the experience for thousand viewers watching the show. The human touch behind the camera was not an ability, but a necessity before the automation helped with followkiller and followpowerup commands. The human would concentrate on the proper point of view and the human would select which battles or areas would be more spectacular for the viewer. Naturally, the human element came with errors that sometimes were simply debated by viewers, sometimes irritating, and at times even irreversible costly: missing a huge quad run or a flag cap, or leaving the camera staring at a ceiling for 2 hours at WCG.

The aforementioned automation made life easier, and at times safe, but what it also did – it took the soul element out of camera work. Today, the camera always follows the killer, always follows quad and flag carriers. Inherently, those are correct choices for focusing the POV, but it comes with a cost at another end – overcorrection. Overcorrection destroys the spectator experience by making games from anything that is soulless, to completely unwatchable.

This spectrum is very easy to dissect:

1. Loss of singularity.
Handing the POV to next player breaks the story. One player game, fueled by his decisions and performance, is one full storyline. Switching the POVs at times becomes something relative to cable surfing, where you are too bored with one good movie to watch, you want to substitute the boring gaps with TruTV top 10 dumbest robbers.

2. Loss of challenge.
Switching POV to a winner seems like a proper thing to do, but why? Let’s say cypher got killed while his opponent is fully stacked. Following cypher will tell the story how to perform a champion-grade rebound and how to overcome the uncertainty and the challenge of the incoming pressure. Viewers get to experience the imminent danger glooming around because killing cypher is an emotional event after all and his way back to control is no less interesting than the killer’s pursuit.
What’s the last time you saw the quad player walking in the room with all that danger, the unchallenging power, dismay, and ultimate destruction? Or maybe, the ultimate success of killing a quad? You haven’t. You get to follow the quad now and get always the one-sided story.

3. Loss of continuity.
Imagine CTF championship game of 8 players, 4 aim beasts on each team, racking up on average 400 kills in 20 minutes. Add to that 3 power ups, and 2 flags. You get to follow it all. This becomes completely unwatchable experience as the camera switches faster than it does the worst episode on MTV2 reality show.

4. Loss of essence.
All of the above converge to the main drawback of soulless automation – the camera does not capture what the game is largely about. One player thought process and strategy. Whether it is duel mind games, TDM team flow, or CTF positioning, auto-follow destroys all of that. Br1ck and whaz might have had the best defense and offense in CTF of all time, you will never know it. You will get to watch their game in 5 seconds intervals mixed with meaningless cess pool in mid.
The issue is even bigger here – failure to capture the inexperienced crowd that needs essence to understand what they are watching. I believe this greatly contributed to popularity of TDM and CTF – people from beginner modes do not get to feel what the game is about when they consider it on stream. Majority of common men fell in love with the game not by playing it, but by spectating <insert idol here>. New players barely get that experience anymore.

As long as the reflection rant lasted, the conclusion is brief:

Everything in moderation:
While the automation is helpful, don’t rely on it fully. Take control of your presentation.

Game modes:
Today, duel manual camera work is doable, in TDM and lolCA it is desirable, and in CTF it is absolutely essential. I do not see much up for discussion here.

Presenters:
Most common source of the game relay today is a single caster. One caster can man the camera and talk about what he sees all at the same time. Have a bind that toggles the follow* variables and execute them only when you feel is appropriate, when you feel that maybe the game is getting boring from current POV or meaningless.

DuelCup is now FlairTV (16 comments)
Posted by flair @ 00:34 CST, 12 February 2015 - iMsg
Channel DuelCup is Changing on Twitch to twitch.tv/flairtv

When I started the N.A. Duelcup I took up streaming to ensure that the games would always be covered. I did not realize just how much I would enjoy casting/streaming events and even my own games. Because the channel is expanding to cover more than just the NA DuelCup and I can see myself doing this for quite a while I am re-branding the channel. The new channel FlairTV will hopefully allow me to expand to other game modes with a higher success rate. Additionally there are many games coming out soon. While I do not see the QuakeLive community moving else where anytime soon the new channel name FlairTV is not game specific so potential viewers will be easier to obtain (in theory).

The #duelcup irc and duelcup.com will remain. They are for the tournament anyway, not the stream.

For now http://youtube.com/duelcup will continue to be used, but this may change in the future as well. I am much less concerned about this since most people who watch the VODs are twitch followers who missed the live broadcast and would like to watch in 60 fps.

If you are currently following http://twitch.tv/duelcup and are enjoying the content please continue to do so on http://twitch.tv/flairtv !! This is not going to be the funnest move in the world since I am sure to lose some of you, but I strongly feel this will help the channel grow long term. What I will be doing is going live on DuelCup using my second computer, and then going into /host mode so that anyone viewing DuelCup will see FlairTV. This will continue for a month, and hopefully the "damage" will be minimal.

Thanks for Quaking
~Flair

ctf draft league (11 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 15:45 CST, 11 February 2015 - iMsg
so basically, already ran an intern poll and results were more than positive. still, i'd like this to be a public thing for a change so i'm interested in what the rest of you have to say.

question at hands is, would you play a ctf draft league? i'd do the biweekly schedules to avoid it lasting over a month and at the start/middle of march when my uni classes end. anyway, cast your votes here please: http://strawpoll.me/3619002

and yeah, i kind of gave up on the idea of duel draft league since duel's still the only active thing in ql in terms of events + the last 2 ctf drafts were successful so why not try.

edit: oh yeah, whoever voted in that #p-s poll, please don't vote here again since your votes are noted already. and please DON'T vote yes if you have no intention of actually playing.

UPDATE: so combining results with this poll, http://strawpoll.me/3545232/r the total amount of yes votes is 62. Let's say ~20 people voted on both polls, that's still leaves us with over 40 (8 teams with 5 players each). In the next few days I'll announce everything regarding signups, etc.

i mean all that traening, countless hours of dedication and discipline, are the players thinking to themselves at the end of the day: was all the effort worth it?

for example:

cypher won dreamhack 2013 right, after all the celebration, the champagne he goes backstage and thinks to himself "yey i'm the best razer mouse customer in the world........ : | "
