Make sure to check out his other work, ranging from
- cold war's impact on video games and the media

- Brief history of gaming/graphics and much more.

Posted by dehun @ 03:06 CDT, 24 March 2017 - iMsg

I have started a small service for quake live duel server on demand spawning and matchmaking.
Give it a try please at

Servers hosted in Amsterdam (have good connectivity, you can play from Germany for example).
It grabs statistics from
Then it tries to match you to another person in the queue with the same statistics(max gap is 300 glicko points).
On demand server spawning work quite straightforward - it just gives you link which you send to your friend. When you click on the link - steam launcher kick you in the game.
Spawned servers got stopped on inactivity.

Any feedback would be appreciated :)
In case if it will be useful - I can add some requested features.
Also please let me know if you think we should host this not in Amsterdam, but at some other more optimal place?

For those with a lot of free time, and that enjoy drama, i leave google docs sheet with name highligth for easy reading (gillz red, me green, rest cyan) of a recent issue. We both got kicked some days ago for a similar situation.

What do you think guys? Its gillz the tard that cant respect other people opinions or its me that should let him attack me with his comments no problemo? Cause its hard to get attacked and instead of dealing with the tard, you have to let him say super stupid ad-hominem shit towards you and stay quiet or get kicked. And the channel was on offtopic mode long before i chimed in with my view of what was already being talked about, that wasnt the problem, imo its gillz inability to respect that other people can have different opinions, ive seen him on similar attacks vs xero and others on the very same channel when they dont have his same opinion. But dont let my biased view of the problem be the decider, have a good read while we wait for the beta.

Those that read please vote

Those that DONT CARE please DONT CARE enough to not shitpost or shitvote because otherwise YOURE CARING. But i think theres at least one obvious negative force in the channel and i dont believe its me.

Made a QL config close to QC on lowest GFX (14 comments)

Based on the videos of QC's gameplay we've seen so far, I made a config that looks close/very close to what will prolly be the lowest GFX settings of QC.

Made by guessing it won't be possible to hard-tweak the config file(s) etc, but only lowering the GFX at the ingame menu(s), just like in Overwatch or any (relatively) recent AAA games.

You can get it from there :

Watching replays and ra3 maps not available in replays. (5 comments)
Posted by __BusteR__ @ 14:25 CDT, 23 March 2017 - iMsg
I have a whole list of demos/replays that I try to watch in quake live and get an error message that says it cannot play "mapname.bsp".
One of them I downloaded the pk3 file and added it to the baseq3 folder where the pk3 files are and it still wont load that demo.

Is there a trick to this? Also, where can I get all the ra3 maps that I cant watch that I normally just play on the servers I visit?

Also, when I visit these servers and the maps load as normal when playing, there is a brief download session before the map loads. Is this a temporary download or are these maps saved permanently? If not, is there a way to make them permanent?

Thanks for any help.

One of the maps I want is ra3map10b.bsp
There is a demo/replay in there I really want to watch.

Lately I've been enjoying some old school q3 demos/videos from the early 2000s. I've been trying to remember what this one dueler called himself. He was often refered to as "the father (or grandfather?) of russian quake" I just can't seem to find a nickname that rings a bell on any of the pro-gamer lists I've searched. I'm thinking it starts with a M but I could be wrong. Defenetly not cooller, evil, pavel etc, this was back when fatality and zero4 were at the top.

Quake called a vote. (2 comments)
Posted by cajun_ @ 21:08 CDT, 21 March 2017 - iMsg
The last days, due to the inminent release of the Quake Champions open beta and Bethesda's aim to provide it with the largest amount of users possible, i've seen lots of people debating on why Quake is not as successful as other game franchises, commonly finding its main causes at the developers action or inaction, such as the scarce quantity and quality of content released, its retro graphics and the inability to update them to the present days, etc. But there's one aspect which is not so frequently put up to debate, and that could really make a difference in terms of success in the times to follow for this beautiful game: competitions.

The Quake community is famous for its competitiveness among other games, in which 90% of their commonly way-bigger-than-Quake playerbase's contact with competition is a few million viewers stream. This community has always been very active in terms of community-based tourneys and leagues (despite of not having an open LAN client), and even in the late times this has been the main support for the pro scene. The community, through events like ESL, Euro Tournaments, 125 FPS leagues and Sunday Cups, HoQ Leagues, Clanbase, and many others, played a really crucial role in the last years for Quake to remain active and interesting to follow.

My personal opinion is that competitions get more interesting for everyone when there's some reward awaiting for the winner, even if this reward is not enough to make a living out of esports. For this reason i think that we should go over this 100% free to play mood (even more since Quake is one of the few games that can provide almost infinite hours of fun) and put our very little own effort in supporting the supporters, both players and organizers. This F2P ideal has always been inherent to the Quake essence, but its now that the gaming scene has become massive that some changes are needed.

With a little bigger rewards for the players and a little bigger support for the admins, more players will take part in the competitions and also the promotional and organizative effort made by the admins will be stronger, providing a more attractive look to the product. With more players taking part in competitions, more potential viewers and followers will arrive, and, hopefully, this would generate an increase of activity into the community.

So please guys, F1 and thanks for your time.

gLeagues Quake 3 CPMA Duel Ladder (10 comments)
Posted by Pan1c_ @ 20:08 CDT, 21 March 2017 - iMsg
Hi everyone, I'm United States of America pan1c and some of you might know me from cpma CPMA. Over the past year me and a friend have been working on a website where anyone can start and maintain their own tournaments or ladders in any game they like, and we're ready to launch! To celebrate this, on 31. March 2017 we'll be opening a Quake 3 CPMA ladder for Europe Europe and CanadaMexicoUnited States of America North America with a 100 USD cash prize, and we might be interested in accepting donations for a larger pool.

Our website currently allows you to create and maintain your own ladders in whatever game you please, and if we don't offer the game at this moment we would be happy to add it. As a Quake player, I want to see this community live on, and with Quake Champions on the horizon I wanted to do something cool. So I'll be hosting this duel ladder and putting up the cash for the prize myself. Quake has been my home for many years, through many ups and downs, and I'd like to do whatever I can to see any iteration of it live on. So, without further ado, welcome to gLeagues.

We hope you enjoy yourselves so lets keep this wonderful game, and this even better community thriving. -- Love pan1c.

QC Duel mode discussion (No comments)
Posted by tihkal @ 18:32 CDT, 20 March 2017 - iMsg
Btw I was the anon poster in the other thread, so I didn't just blatantly take someone else's idea. I had a rough idea of an alternative duel mode and am interested in opinions. What about a duel mode with champions. Not 100% how to implement but something along the lines of. Each player picks a champion that is hidden to the other untill the game starts. Then gets 2 swaps (if they choose). First chance is after 3:20 (assuming would be after a death, otherwise swaps while alive could result in a - 1 score or something?) then 6:40. Or do you think that would just result in the first person to change getting countered after each choice?

AMD vs Nvidia Input Lag (9 comments)
Posted by Regent @ 12:43 CDT, 20 March 2017 - iMsg
I found this interesting spreadsheet about input lag for dolphin (gamecube emulator) using different combinations of hardware:

This guy's tests remind me of the input lag tests on mice that was going on around here a couple years ago. He's using photodiodes to detect a switch in the screen from black to white that is initiated by a button press on a USB gamepad. So the test procedure looks legitimate and tests everything between the controller press and what's seen on the screen, which would include USB speed, GPU, and monitor if I understand correctly.

The columns of interest are C and D. These are using the same version of software and the same 120 Hz CRT, but with only changing the computer components. Assuming the CPU+motherboard doesn't change anything (which it may because of USB processing maybe?) the only real difference is nVidia gtx 960 to AMD 5770.

Notice there is a 20 ms increase in input lag caused by GPU change from nV to AMD.

Quote: "it seems quite likely to me that the AMD 5770 card from 2009 is causing much higher latency than the GTX 960 from 2015. This was very surprising to me, I had expected that modern graphics cards should be very similar in processing time."

Now this is relevant to me as I recently upgraded from a GTX 460 to 380x and play quake on a 120 Hz CRT. I have said to myself lately that my setup does not feel as snappy as it did a year ago, but with these things it can be so hard to tell without real data. Maybe this only affects the 5770 this guy uses, and only for the digital->analog conversion [nevermind, the problem is there with digital output as well, though not as bad]. I imagine the DAC is an afterthought these days, and I assume posting this on any other forum people would probably just say who cares about analog output (<3 120Hz CRT).

But my question is has anyone seen any other tests of input lag for different GPUs? And even better would be analog vs digital for the two brands.

TL;DR - AMD card found having higher processing time for analog output compared to nVidia leading to higher input lag, can anyone confirm

Evil vertical aim trick and rapha item clash trick (14 comments)
Posted by yoyoman @ 05:45 CDT, 20 March 2017 - iMsg
I found out how evil aims vertically very well. His sensitivity helps but what I noticed is he likes to keep his xhair as horizontal as possible making it easier for him to hit harder from a vertical angle. I also found out rapha likes to make the mega and ra clash when he is over-stacked on armor sometimes even if he is out of control and/or the opponent knows so that he can deal damage at the major items while being able to take his own major item safely or the opponent can waste his time waiting for ra and if he decides to give up on ra then you can delay him so you can steal the mega. This works especially well on maps like battleforge where you can punish both major items easily without sacrificing a major or receiving lots of damage. t7 works too but it's harder to defend/delay if enemy gives up waiting on red. The more you know :)

Thunderdome Season 8 - signups open (9 comments)
Posted by Åke Vader @ 06:36 CDT, 19 March 2017 - iMsg
For QuakeWorld players feeling an urge to do some competitive dueling there are good news coming as a new season of Thunderdome is taking signups. Thunderdome has for the last years been one of the staple tournaments in QuakeWorld, running for seven consecutive seasons in a row now and one of the main factors behind its popularity has been the way that players are matched against opponents of similar skill in a judgement made primarily by head admin Russia VVD. Season eight will be no different with the skill span ranging from divisions with elite players to divisions where duelers may be more or less starting from scratch.

The map pool has featured a bit of controversy the last years as one of the big five maps - DM6 - has been replaced by Bravado (made by United States of America Foogs). The map pool is thus DM2, DM4, Aerowalk, ZTNDM3 and Bravado.

Another interesting addition this season is that the highest division is called the "Open Division". In this division any player can decide to step up and play with the big guys in case he/she think they got what it takes. This is in addition to playing in their regular division. Besides the open division consisting of the best opponents there are, it also features more games than the other divisions as best-of-five match format is used earlier than for the other divisions. To find out about any other changes you are advised to skim through the rules section before the tournament.

The new season does not have a 100% set start date yet but it is expected to be in about a week's time.

gpu : GTX 970 4GB
hdd/ssd : crucial something 250Go SSD and Seagate something 2To

mousepad : goliathus speed extended (XXL one)
keyboard : ozone strike mech black switches (solid as fuck keyboard, last longer than any steelseries mech keyboard)

250fps @ QL
144fps @ RFLX (feels smoother than QL)
152fps @ OW (feels just as smooth as RFLX)

If my graphic card doesn't allow me to play at 144fps with lowest possible gfx settings @ QC, I'll get a GTX 1070 8GB. If I can already play QC @ 144fps stable with my GTX 970, I'll be fucking happy :D.

QuakeCon '17 to feature Quake Champions tournament (150 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 05:07 CDT, 17 March 2017 - iMsg
In a new extensive interview with Russian esports site, Quake Champions Executive Director Tim Willits revealed several important details for the game and its future in esports, including:

- Quake Champions will be featured in a tournament at QuakeCon 2017
- All future Champions will be free with a purchase of the full game
- Team gamemode 'Sacrifice' (and Duel) is being built for esports
- Ranked matchmaking will be for both Duel and team gamemodes
- Anti-cheat measures are being put into place with a third party organization
- Another classic map will make its return to QC
- Closed beta will start in the next few weeks

"So. Yes. We are committed to have a large e-sports presence. We can not announce any partnerships right now, but we're talking to all of the big esports companies, I mean we were just in Poland, Katowice IEM which is ESL's event. So we're definitely talking to the different companies, we want to make a game esports-friendly, spectacular, with different spectating features and we want to have a game modes that are esports-friendly, and we feel, after talking to a lot of pro players, that the one versus one (Duel) is something that is missing in the first-person esports scene. As well as one esports game mode which we're currently working on (Sacrifice) based on a feedback from some number of pro players. So yes, we very, you know, we very focused on e-sports. Quake has a long history of e-sports and we definitely want to work with a number of partners to ensure that we will have as many tournaments as possible."

Translator Russia Artem 'DieZel' Volodin has made the interview in its entirety available for ESReality below:

"My vacation from broadcasting may be a bit open-ended as there's a LittleScotsman on the way and that whole fatherhood thing is pretty time-consuming, so I've been told."

'I doubt I will stop forever, though. Quake still runs through my veins and broadcasting has been a fantastic creative outlet for me for over 4 years now. As long as there are games to cover, you can rest assured I'll be shouting "Holy Shitballs!"

I used to love watching the king of the hill events, and all of them really! Would love it if some of the Ql-tv crew would be interested enough in Quake Champions to start some of that up again :)

Anyone herd how hes doing?

Scalebearer is not too slow (3 comments)
Posted by zlr @ 18:25 CDT, 16 March 2017 - iMsg
He has the following to make up for it:

- Bull rush every 30 seconds, with 75% damage reduction during
- Passive skill 'heavyweight', if he drops from a height near other champions he does damage to them
- More max health and armor
- Spawns with 50 armor
- More resistant to weapon knockback (not 100% confirmed but seems likely from watching the videos)

Would you want a champion with that kind of killing power and tankiness to also be able to move as fast as other champions? I don't think so.

He can still rocket jump too.

Why did Doom 4 Multiplayer fail? (16 comments)
Posted by cx @ 16:44 CDT, 16 March 2017 - iMsg
Why did it fail? They outsourced the multiplayer component to a company that only concentrated on creating the multiplayer content.
And all 3 DLCs so far were made for the multiplayer, and they even created that snapmap feature, that makes it easy to create maps for multiplayer ... and although all this effort was invested into Doom and Doom was a commercially successful title and has a big playerbase the multiplayer failed in the end nevertheless. They even created a multiplayer feature where players can transform into a demon and hunt players down. Similar to quake they concentrated on Deathmatch like a typical Arena fps, but although it was the newest fps by id software it won no players over. A lot of people anticipate the new quake champions now, but why wasnt Doom 4 a worthy contender back then?

Need Help Identifying Map (6 comments)

So below are every image released of the new map. Tim Willits has been quoted as saying its a "classic duel map". As someone who rarely duels, I wanted to know what you guys thought it could be.

Of note: every image is indeed the same map, you can tell by the ash falling from the sky / same textures / themes of doorways / lava / ribs in the sky.

Also of note: the map might be altered like DM6 was. So i imagine they will have flattened it a bit, and added extra hallways to get from a to b.

Posted by linoleuM @ 17:46 CDT, 14 March 2017 - iMsg
As we all know, upon the release of QC all the former pros will start playing again and the new golden age of Quake will begin.

5v5 TDM will rule the eSport world and Valve will go bankrupt.

Now, who would you like to see as a team, based on the champions' abilities we know so far? Here are my picks:

Cooller as Ranger;
Special ability: Dire Orb (teleport), could be a number of players, but who wouldn't want to see Cooller come back to Quake and teleport everywhere like it's nothink?

Rapha as Visor,
Special ability: Piercing Eye (wallhack), to be 5 steps ahead

if-22 as Nyx,
Special ability: Ghost Walk (invisibility), so he can +back more than ever

rat as Anarki,
Special ability: CPMA movement, just get the best CPMA player ever on the team, kay?

Fatal1ty as Clutch,
Special ability: no idea but he looks OP af, good way for Fat to get additional undeserved titles under his belt!

What's yours?

If somebody can download it or have the original video file, and reupload it to another mirror, I really appreciate that.

Quake Champions Interview (No comments)
Posted by Lup1n @ 12:04 CDT, 14 March 2017 - iMsg
Link to original interview:

Google translated:

The first question will be about PAX East, which has just ended. This is the first event where the game Quake Champions has been widely shown, and any participant can play in it. So - what sensations from the show and what responses you get to Quake Champions?
We've brought the game to the exhibition PAX East, which took place over the weekend, and it was very nice for us. The most common comment I hear: "Yes, this is the Quake!". And it was the most important, it tells us that we are moving on the right track, that we are moving to where planned. What we have preserved the spirit and heart of Quake, which we all love. People sat down and played and commented: "Yes, a great speaker and muvment" "Yes, trunks that must be!", "Yes, this is the whole Quake!". We received a lot of feedback and comments, but you yourself can see them on the network, such that the Champions appearance did not kill the game process, it is still Quake, and the people were fun to watch as the Champions ability to impact on the whole gameplay . So I'm absolutely happy with the display of the game at PAX last weekend.

Very cool, we congratulate you on this! Now you have quite a large number of reviews. How do you take advantage of them? Who will process the information and how?
We have a few details that we'd like to correct. There are a lot of comments and feedback, which we would like to pay close attention. Basically, it reviews the professional players who tried the game. We had the intention, and we did it, brought the game to the Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice, Poland, which took place a couple of weeks ago. And there we have shown the game a large number of professional competitive players, and some of their comments have led to changes in the command mode of the game, they gave us very specific comments about the technique of movement in the game. They wanted a faster weapon switch, in general, they were given a set of tips for improvement, which we tried on some time on tests. Finally, for several future weeks we start closed beta testing of the game. In the beginning it will be "very small" beta testing. With the small number of participants. We want to get the first reviews of the game from the beta testers. We have already shown that the community hear, take into account their wishes. And if all goes well, we will gradually expand the audience, inviting to test more and more new players.

So, closed beta testing is just around the corner?
Yes Yes Yes! If you go to site, register and sign up for the beta, then, when a few weeks we will begin to invite people to test - wait for your invitation! Very soon, yes. But, bear in mind that the number of invitees will be increased gradually. We want to test the server infrastructure, we want to test the so-called "backend" - matchmaking application for rating, Champions balance, game modes and collect statistics. And we will all the time to expand the number of participants in closed beta. So - "Stay tuned"!

And another small question about the closed beta. Can you name the number of people who are currently signed up for testing?
Yes, I have, of course, there is a number, and it is great! This, of course, was amazing for us! We were very pleased so many willing and this number exactly enough for all of our plans for the closed test. As I said, we no longer wanted to test the server part: if the server crashes at high load the game, which will withstand the load with an increase in the number of players. We want to test the balance of Champions, to make sure that none of the champions has no superiority. Of course, we will gradually increase the load and are very pleased that wishing enough.

But, nevertheless, shed a ray of light - what about the order of registrations on the beta? It is hundreds, or thousands, or even tens of thousands of applications?
Yes, I understand the question, but, alas, I can not talk about the numbers. I can say one thing: you know what the second country in the number of registrations in the beta test after the United States? Russia!

Go to the block of questions about the eSports scene. And the first is this: how do you plan to promote Quake Champions eSports? Will the game to advance in the tournament known eSports organizations, such as, ESL, or you plan to do it all yourself through Quakecon?
Yes, as we have said before, we intend to move in the direction of e-sports. At the moment, we can not disclose any agreements with third parties, but yes, we are negotiating with large cyber companies, such as, Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice, which is part of the ESL. We definitely are in discussions with the companies, we want to make the game, not only sports competition, but also convenient for eSports, with many options for viewing and broadcasting matches. We would like to introduce suitable for eSports game modes. And after we talked to the professional players, we felt that the duels niche games alone, absent, and decided to implement it in a Quake Champions. Yes, we are committed to eSports. Quake has the longest history of competitive and we most definitely are configured to hold as many tournaments Quake Champions.

Will we see on Quake Champions competition at the upcoming Quakecon?
Yes, definitely, we want to hold on Quake Champions tournament Quakecon this year. I already talked about this in the last Quakecon, so yes, the tournament will be, and soon you will learn more about it. This, of course, very important for us.
You mentioned modes of play, and I ask you to talk a little more about them, particularly about the tournament and about the competitive modes rating modes. What will they be?
You will play in the league matches - it will be a batch mode, primarily the TDM, and dueling matches alone. And we have a new eSports mode "victim" (Sacrifice), which is one of the famous players played in the last Quakecon and said that it must be completely replaced (ha ha). In fact, developing a competitive mode, we heavily relied on professional advice and did what they told us. Of course, we knew that we needed a team with a mission mode and, of course, a duel. As we look forward, these regimes are the major cyber disciplines Quake Champions, and, of course, it will be a classic TDM.

And what about the automatic matchmaking, for example, I run Quake Champions, I want to play in the league match at Sacrifice mode, press the button "to find a match." Whether this option is available?
All the development we have gradually improved and continue to improve the system of automatic search for a suitable match. Firstly, you will need to select the region where you currently are, then the system begins to search for the players around you, appropriate to your level of play and the system will find you a server geographically appropriate. In beta testing in the first place you select your region, then the matchmaking system will look for you to opponents in a given region. Clearly I tell?

Yes, thank you, everything is clear. Next, we would like to ask a question about the card and its design. For example, Blood Covenant card is Campgrounds, taken from Quake 3. Are there any other famous and recognized the card, such as Blood Run or Aerowalk, carried over from the previous installments in the series Quake Champions?
This is a very good question. Yes! We have another classic card is almost ready for release. I can not say what kind of a map, but I am absolutely sure that it is exactly all painfully familiar. This card dueling - people are happy to see it and play it.
We are glad to hear it. Each previous game Quake had its own set of physical parameters, for example, Quake World bannihop it was in Quake 3 - streyfdzhampy in Quake 4 - sliding. It is always influenced the balance of cards and their design size.
New Quake champions have different abilities, as reflected in the design of the card, and how to solve the imbalance problem?
Oh, yes, it's another great question. Yes, as you said, Champions have different styles of movement. For example, Anarki owns EIR-control, both in the Quake World, and Ranger strafe-jumping, as it was in Quake 3. And it seems to say, sets a certain task to design cards. For example, the current version of q3dm6, Blood Covenant, on the map now has a place where Anarki or Slash can get much faster and easier than other champions. This is also taken into account in the design of a balance between the champions, of the strategy and card design. Of course, we are trying to find a delicate balance, but here's an example - q3dm6 place where lies railgun. If you play Nyx, you can jump, the ability to use wall-run, and get to the railgun and the same back. But Snorlag under the same conditions only rocket jump-jump. Playing for Anarki you can rasprygatsya enough to fly this flight. So, depending on the Champion for whom you play, you need to understand your options applicable to that particular map. But we hope to further delve into the balancing process and find the perfect balance.

Now we have a few questions about the technical side of the game. The first one of the servers. Will you be able to run your own server Quake Champions?
In the beginning, we run the server themselves. In terms of - we need a server in the right places, in the territories that will provide playable settings for the greatest number of participants. It is very important for us, because it is very important ping. Because with the development, we need to test the load and stability, because the game will be free-to-play, and immediately after the release, we expect a huge number of players. You will be able to run custom-server, to invite people to play with. But the official server will be started by us and will be managed by us.
That is, if we understand correctly, the server for the official launch of rating games can not, it will all be under your control?
Yes, the server for the matchmaking will be exclusively under our control. You can start the server, but matchmaking he would not participate.

The next question is about the notorious 120 Hz. In one of your interviews that you gave a few years ago about Rage, said that most games run at 30 Hz, and Rage will run at 60Hz. In Quake Champions we are talking about 120 Hz, what impact will this have on the game.
So, it is about the hertz. It is necessary to separate and not to confuse the concept of FPS and Hertz. Hertz - a concept which is embedded in the rate of change of the game space, and FPS is simply the number of frames per second are drawn. And Quake Champions we strive to get 120 Hz frequency of the FPS and independent, to ensure excellent responsiveness of the game, and make it smooth and fast as possible. And I believe that the more we get the frequency, the more will be more enjoyable gameplay.

So, okay, but does that mean that the server will be 120 times per second to send to the client an update on the game situation. Or it is only about the client side?
Of course, this is only on the client side. Internet chock cluttered up, if you put games in 120 packets per second. Yes, this is a client-side responsiveness.

What is currently the general requirements for the client side Quake Champions? What, for example, a video card, you have to get a pleasant and comfortable game?
You know, we are focused on debugging gameplay and balancing Champions, and is not particularly engaged in the optimization of the code, but we are sure, or rather, we want to try and do everything possible to make the game gave out a high FPS on most computers. But we do, however, have not yet begun to do the work on optimization. As soon as we have information on the recommended hardware - we will publish it immediately, and is sorry.

Another acute issue for the community: Tim, what do you think about the possibility of cheaters in the game? You promise the game free-to-play, so everyone will be able to play for free. In the competitive game with a large advertising campaign, especially in the discipline of eSports, always flooding back cheaters. How to prevent it or how to deal with them?
Yes, we know the problem and we are working on two lines in this context. First - we try as much as possible the critical game moments transferred from the client side to the server, the purpose is not to inform the customer more information than he needs to know, and the second - we are now cooperating, working with an outside organization, develop a special service, but we do not announced it. All that I can say - we work with a certain company, which helps us with the anti-cheat, and we have a whole group that works with the company. We have, in a short time, to announce this cooperation. We hope that by cheaters protection will be for us and it will work.

At the end of the interview let us once again discuss the business model on which the game will be distributed.
So, the game itself is free, but the free part is only one champion - Ranger. You can buy Champions Pack with all champions or buy individual Champions temporarily or permanently.
If I buy a Champions Pack at the start of the game, I get access to the champions who appear later in the game?
Yes, the complete package includes full access to the current set of Champions and all future.

Thank you, Tim, for your time, we hope that we still manage to communicate in the future. Thank you, good bye!
You will also thank you and good evening!

From news

"id Software's Lead Quake Designer Adam 'SyncError' Pyle and new Esports Director United States of America John 'ZeRo4' Hill recently ventured to IEM Katowice to have CSGO pros try out the game (non-duel)"

They think that TDM in Quake not so good as CSGO.
And trying to take some experience from CSGO pro players.

ok, in 2004 i'm trying to speak with CS players about Quake.

They said:

"Its too fast"

"My fingers were tired"

"Its not fair that you takes armors and quad"

"you jumping like idiot"

"there are no guns in real life like in quake - game lying to us and try to deceit us, but we adult guys and understand that its not real."

Is it means Tim Willits like me in 2004?

Ok, he think like man who aside of Quake life, from common positions like "better to ask, than not to ask".

And why Zero4 Hill not stoped this idea? He cant say to Timm "This complitely different games and people, no need to ask them"

Is it means Zero4 is NOTHING?

Willits: "Want to push ppl to teamplay" (123 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 23:04 CDT, 13 March 2017 - iMsg
While id Software has made a commitment to Duel and its importance in esports, much of the focus for Quake Champions is in its team-based game modes. For QC Executive Director Tim Willits, this will allow for both new players to find an easier footing in QC, and to keep Quake diehards happy.
"Historically, most of our Quake games are free-for-all, so you have one winner and 15 losers," Willits told GameSpot. "So we definitely want to push people more into teamplay because you have a better chance of winning--a 50-percent chance of winning. And it allows, especially new people, to find a champion they like, be successful, not have the entire weight of the game on their shoulders, and have these successes that build over time so you can feel more comfortable as your skills increase."

"It's 2017, and we want to have a lot of people to play the game. We both need to make our Quake fans happy but also make the game approachable and new and fresh and allow people to feel good when they play it."
Willits also remains confident that abilities in QC and comparisons to other games such as Overwatch will not detract from a true Quake experience.
"We do feel that when you come and play, you go, 'This is the right way to play.' You still run and jump and strafe-jump and rocket-jump and stuff, so it doesn't really change. I think people are like, 'Oh my god! There's abilities in Quake; you're ruining the game!' Luckily, people that have gone through [our PAX demo] are like, 'This is good,' and they see what we're trying to do.

"We needed to tap into that core DNA of Quake: skill-based, it's fast, everyone has the same weapons; no one has a weapon advantage. We have the holy trinity: rocket launcher, railgun, lightning gun--we'll never mess with that. That core game loop, the recipe for our cookie, is good. So then we just need to add on stuff and push, push, push--oh, that was too much, come back a little bit and then push, push, push.

I like a lot the engine, the netcode, the cosmetics, most of the maps, the weapons (ion cannon AKA lg can be so fucking strong, and plasma aswell), the movements (I like both VQL and CPM-like actually) and ofc the matchmaking and ranking :).

I bought some cosmetics today, just take a look at my beautiful character :

Quake Champions committed to Duel esport (72 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 08:44 CDT, 13 March 2017 - iMsg
While Quake Champions will have a strong emphasis on team modes, the historical Quake staple of 1v1 Duel has previously been confirmed to be in QC. While details on the inner workings of the game mode have not yet been made public and no new information was provided at PAX East, Quake Champions Executive Director Tim Willits has assured that Duel will be a focus for esports. id Software's Lead Quake Designer Adam 'SyncError' Pyle and new Esports Director United States of America John 'ZeRo4' Hill recently ventured to IEM Katowice to have CSGO pros try out the game (non-duel), and professional Quake players will be coming to id Software's offices as soon as today to test Duel further than the play tests at QuakeCon 2016.

“There is a hole with one-versus-one, it's missing from first-person eSports,” Quake Champions Executive Director Tim Willits told PCGamesN at PAX East. “The title fights are great for Quake so our Duel mode is going to be uniquely Quake, but will still incorporate the champions. We have Duels [working in-game] but we need to get more pro players to play it, just to make sure they like it. We have some coming up to id next week.

Duel mode primed for eSports (25 comments)
Posted by Ward_- @ 23:21 CDT, 12 March 2017 - iMsg
Pulled kicking and screaming into the modern world of heroes and champions as it may be, Quake is back. What that means is that Quake Champions will need Duel, the fast-paced, impossibly skill-testing one-on-one mode that is still almost unmatched in the world of eSports. It’s being worked on right now and Tim Willits, studio director over at the developer, has a few, tantalising hints to give on it.

“There is a hole with one-versus-one, it's missing from first-person eSports,” says Willits at PAX East, where the game is being demoed publically for the first time. “The title fights are great for Quake so our Duel mode is going to be uniquely Quake, but will still incorporate the champions.”

This may disappoint some who were hoping Quake Champions would remain true to the first half of its name for the most competitive mode. However, having now played it - for which we’ll bring you a proper preview soon - they are a significant modification to the formula, but not one that utterly changes it. Abilities or differences in move speed and air control are all simply another tool.

Plus, the pros are on board. “We have Duels [working in-game] but we need to get more pro players to play it, just to make sure they like it. We have some coming up to id next week,” explains Willits. He also mentions that id were at IEM Katowice, with a small room at the back of the business area not open to press or general public. This was similar to how the game was tested around QuakeCon.

“We've been listening to [the pros] too, at Quakecon last year the pro players came in, they played our team mode and they were like 'yeah you gotta change this', we said okay, we started changing it,” remembers Willits.

We’re taking bets as to how this new Duel will be built in the comments below. Perhaps a mirror system where characters are treated like maps, both players picking the same one to test their skill? Or some sort of pick/ban, where you have a range of champions to play, deciding depending on map? We’ll find out more soon.

“...We wanted to make [the champion abilities] additive to the experience, not replacing the experience,” Quake Champions creative director, Tim Willits, told me following my time with the game. “We feel that it's a good bridge between our hardcore Quake fans that would murder us if we messed with the formula,” Willits half-joked, “but it also has something that is new and a little bit more modern.”

QC Weapons switching & ground accel ? (No comments)
Posted by He4rTL3sS @ 14:57 CDT, 12 March 2017 - iMsg
Anyone knows if the weapons switches will be very fast (reflex-like), instant (CPM/QW) or relatively slow (Q2/VQ3/CQ3/QL) ?

Anyone knows more about the actual ground accel of the game ? Relatively slow (QW, but higher max speed), normal (Q2/VQ3/CQ3/QL) or fast (Q4) or very fast (CPM/RFLX) ?

Im really excited about Quake Champions.

What are your thoughts about pro gamers? QC is a promosing large Esports competetive game play as CS:GO and OW.

Will they return?

PS: I hope ESR community will be like 5% of what QC might have.

I hope QC will have at least 10 million player base in first six months.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Quake Champions System Requirements (42 comments)

What you think about the hardware requirements guys and with which System do you plan to play the game?

Will you upgrade your system especially for QC?

Or will you keep your current system?

And which hardware is needed for enough frames to feed a decent 120 to 144 hz monitor by your guessings?

Anyone find it strange how when you get mad at anything that you do, you tend to perform worse? Like if you become emotional over someone beating you, you're not thinking so you don't learn from your mistakes. It's weird. But if you can control your emotions, you develop understanding and then that makes you stronger.

Quake Champions Speed Limit? (53 comments)
Posted by p0ffer @ 14:24 CST, 10 March 2017 - iMsg

I have been checking the game since the announcement and it looks pretty good.
However, recently I checked the nyx page and I saw that there is a speed limit of 800 ups to all champions and her walking speed seems around 320~ and her max 750~ as shown by the white and red bars.

I seriously hope this is not true and there is no cap in strafing speed, if yes its a major letdown for me and I bet for most people who can strafe properly or move well around the map.

Key points to consider this as a failure mechanic if its implemented:
1) a cj and 3 jumps will reach u near 800~ ups in VQL
2) a cj alone can give you more than 600~ ups in PQL
3)One rocket jump alone can give you more than 850~ ups

So, as you can see it makes no sense at all, I hope it is just a confusion or misunderstanding. Thanks.

*Here is the picture with nyx's stats I was talking about:

Willits: "At its core, QC will be free" (145 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 10:56 CST, 10 March 2017 - iMsg
Quake Champions Executive Director Tim Willits tells Polygon that "at its core [Quake Champions] will be free"

Players who want to can play Ranger for free, or they can buy the Champion Pack and get unlimited access to Ranger and all other champions for a fixed price.
At its core, it’s a free-to-play game,” Willits said, “with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions. There are a number of Quake players that just want to play their Quake, right? And they are familiar with the business model of our previous games, and they are totally fine. ‘I want to buy the game. I want to start playing. I want to have access to all the Champions.’

“But then we also understand that we want to get as many people into the game as possible, especially outside of North America and Western Europe, where we have a massive fan base. So we want to have the flexibility to have a free-to-play option for those people.”

“We do feel it's more approachable,” Willits said, “and we feel that with our team game modes, and then especially our dual mode, that we can fill a hole that's missing in esports today.

“We do have a really nice advantage, because lots and lots of the pro players got their start playing Quake. And yeah, they're playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive now and, Overwatch, but their first love is Quake. So we want to get that critical mass where you have enough players and then we want to ... expand our competitive play, our league play as we move into late this year and next year.

Carmack sues ZeniMax for $22.5 million (2 comments)
Posted by syncore @ 23:12 CST, 9 March 2017 - iMsg
The feud between Oculus and ZeniMax Media is opening back up once again, this time with the CTO of Oculus, John Carmack, suing his former employer for earnings that he claims are still owed to him.

The suit is largely unrelated to the $6 billion trade secrets suit which ended last month with a $500 million judgment against Oculus. Instead Carmack is suing Zenimax Media for $22.5 million that he says has not been paid to him for the 2009 sale of his game studio, id Software, known for such pioneering video game classics as Doom and Quake.

The lawsuit reveals that ZeniMax Media paid $150 million for the game studio behind such pioneering video gaming classics as Doom and Quake.

The document details that Carmack was set to earn $45 million from the id acquisition. In 2011, Carmack converted half of that note into a half-million shares of ZeniMax common stock, but has yet to receive the other half of his earnings in cash or common stock from the company, despite formal requests being made.

Carmack stayed on at ZeniMax Media, a game publisher behind such titles as Skyrim, until late 2013 when his contract expired, at which point he joined Oculus VR as its CTO.

In the suit, reported first by Dallas News, Carmack claims ZeniMax Media has not paid the remaining sum due to, what the suit calls, “a series of allegations regarding claimed violations of Mr. Carmack’s Employment Agreement,” this assumedly relating to ZeniMax’s suit against Oculus regarding the theft of trade secrets.

ZeniMax, however, never brought charges of breach of contract against Carmack in that lawsuit, and Oculus was not found guilty for stealing trade secrets. The judgment was instead levied against Oculus and two of its founders for copyright infringement, false designation and the violation of Palmer Luckey’s NDA.

Carmack’s suit claims “sour grapes” on ZeniMax’s part in not paying back the money he says he is owed, something that has caused Carmack “serious injury” to the tune of more than $22.5 million.

MS now puts ads in Win 10 File Explorer (18 comments)
Posted by Teen Queen @ 16:04 CST, 9 March 2017 - iMsg
Really starting to get tired of this nonsense, is it really time to revert back to older iterations of windows? I can see this trend becoming only worse with time.

".. Not all of Microsoft’s ideas are good, though. The company has shown a tendency to get a little too casual with how it promotes its services within Windows. You might even call these “ads.” Microsoft would, of course, dispute that description. Some of these things that look very much like ads have started showing up in File Explorer. Specifically, Windows 10 has started nagging people to buy a subscription to OneDrive.,.

Yeah I'm sorry about that MS, but this looks like an ad to me.
I'm already incredibly annoyed by having a shabby connection and having to deal with makeshift fixes to disable automatic updates.

Note how these ads appear even if you spent 300 bucks for a license.

creep 2.0 is the second installment in the creep series, with frags from various gamemodes but mostly clan arena. This movie was supposed to be released in the late 2016 but got delayed due to ceveral changes in the music. When it was finally complete and uploaded to youtube it got a copyright strike due to the intro music by Combichrist, and all the audio was muted. This led me to upload the youtube version without the intro, which takes away a little of the whole atmosphere. In other words:

For your best viewing experince, download the full version due to the youtube link is not the complete movie.

Enjoy! :)

Name that game!? (15 comments)
Posted by Jamerio @ 17:56 CST, 7 March 2017 - iMsg
Ok, around 1998 - 2002 I remember seeing this video demo for an FPS game and I have no idea what it is, but it stuck in my mind and I wanted to see it again.

It was snowy, with lots of huts and primitive houses and I think mountains in the immediate background, like some kind of town in alaska and the whole intro was played through the scope of a sniper rifle (which I think became apparent at the end which made it cool), so initially it was zoomed it on a target in a hut, then it zoomed out over a period of about 20 seconds across the city (was impressive in scale), before it showed the sniper pulling the trigger and the initial target was shot. The target MIGHT have been in a guard tower.

There was some eerie, low key music, and dogs barking. I also think it was at night.

Does anyone know what it was called?

£5 via paypal for the first correct answer.

99% sure it was PC.
