“We’re proud of the shiny new splendor of the game’s graphics, but we’re doubly proud we’ve made player skill the most important part of the game,” he said.
“In addition to the single player campaign, we’re putting a tremendous emphasis on the game’s multiplayer component.”
this can be good! i always thought PK was cool, i know many people hated it but in my book it was fun and challenging same as quake.
This is what bugged me the most in the original Painkiller. The developers always said that their game is an homage to Quake 1. However, having played most of the single player recently, it is really just like SS: Go into room, all doors close, lots of enemies spawn, and the doors will open if you kill all enemies.
Besides, the original developers promised to implement Quakeworld physics into Painkiller right after the release. They never implemented it tho.
The physics are fine in pk, they have their own twist really.
Most people just +forward bunnyhop without realizing you can take shortcuts everywhere using diagonals which is easier said than done.
multiplayer is always a gamble. but the original dev team were quite idealistic. now they have an easier engine to work with that will remove the infecious bugs and mod-resistance. in addition, they only need the most elementary SP update to secure their investments. i can't but assume that they took note of the trials and tribulations the original MP painkiller went through. lets just pray this motivates them to do better and learn from their mistakes.
he mentions bunny hopping and strafe jumping, so.. assuming they're using the original Painkiller with all its patches as a starting point, we might have a serious contender here to carry the torch for deathmatch FPS!
dm_sacred was a beautiful map! i hope everyone will get behind this game if it's decent! let's do this!! i mean, what are our alternatives?
PS: btw this topic arises periodically on reddit, showing that there is interest for this type of games. people will eventually get tired of CS/COD clones
Am I really the only one who understands all the physics question as stuff about the havok engine ( or whatever is used now ) and NOT about the movements? Cause to me he never said anything about the movements.
You're right, but later on he did talk about movement. He didn't say much, but he mentioned 'bunny-hopping', and seemed to agree when the interviewer talked about strafe-jumping. (Did the original PK even have strafe-jumping? I thought it was all about single-direction air control, but I barely played it.) Basically he said it was like the original in terms of movement.
Yeah I heard that but I didn't pick it up as " we know what we're doing ". Pk had +forward bunny hopping and you could mix in diagonals and lose the aircontrol for dodging and shortcuts which is the part nobody seems to remember.
Fair enough. I'm hoping that guy was just a bit nervous or something, because he used a whole lot of words to say almost nothing. Not really confidence-inspiring, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.
Now that the devs can see the value in making an esports game, perhaps we should make an effort to inform them of what is needed for one? I think The Farm 51 needs a 100 e-mails about netcode.
They're not going to take us seriously if a random guy just sends them a 100 emails. A community message forwarded by every willing community member, perhaps? My english is crap though, so I'd prefer if somebody else did it.
make an open letter on esr and email them the link, comments mark support and additional details, or make the thread the sketch of the mail, and have comments mark official signatures.
in any case a new thread must be started with the aim of figuring this stuff out. as it happens, while i'm dedicated enough to make this comment, i'm not dedicated enough to make a new thread. x)
[23:11] <+sk1pov_> hi son1dow, we already did a buglist/suggestionlist for the old pk some years ago
[23:11] <+sk1pov_> have a look http://pkzone.org/pkbugs/buglist.htm
[23:12] <+sk1pov_> also i wrote a list of some ideas, after the PKHD announcement and send it to someone at nordic games
[23:12] <+sk1pov_> he said he will forward it to the developers
[23:12] <+sk1pov_> http://pkzone.org/pkbugs/pkhd.txt
That's a decent list, although a bit centric, as it should be, for a list made by one guy.
